1 IRONY AND FORESHADOWING ENGLISH I-A

2 W HAT IS I RONY ? Irony is defined as…. “The use of a word to convey meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning” ex. Saying, “My you’ve made a mess of things” to a hostess who has made a wonderful dinner. (verbal) OR “When the opposite of what expected happens” ex. You wash your car and then it rains. (situational) OR “When the reader or audience are aware of something that the characters in the story are not.” ex. Romeo and Juliet planning for a happy future. (dramatic) AND Sarcasm is also one kind of irony that is praise meant as an insult; can involve malice, the desire to put someone down.
