Micah’s Ordination Sermon Eph. 4 and Acts 20

Eph 4:11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, Eph 4:12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Eph 4:11 For God gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers

Every local church had elders, overseers, pastors. (Acts 14:23, Titus 1:5, 1Thess. 1:12, Heb. 13:7, 17, Acts 20:28, 1Peter 5:1-3)

Act 14:23 And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Titus 1:5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—

Act 6:3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.

Act 20:17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him.

Acts 20:28 Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers (Episkopos or Bishops) to be shepherds (poimie, or “pastors”) of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood. (ISV)

Heb 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over (overseeing) your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

1Pe 5:1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 1Pe 5:2 shepherd (pastor) the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, (bishoping) not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;

John 21:15"Feed my lambs." John 21:16 "Tend my sheep." John 21:17 “Feed my sheep.”

James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

1Co 12:28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers,

2Ti 2:24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,

1Tim. 3:2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.

Able to Teach 2Tim. 2:24-25 N o t - q u a r r e l s o m e P a t i e n t w h e n w r o n g e d C o r r e c t s w i t h g e n t l e n e s s K i n d t o a l l These four qualities surround “able to teach.”

1Timothy 3:1 If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.

1Peter 5:2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly!

1. Be an example to the flock (1Pt. 5:3) 2. Pray for the flock. (James 5:14) 3. Feed the flock (Acts 20:28, 1Tim. 3:2, 1Peter 5:3) 4. Watch over (oversee) the flock. (Acts 20:28, 31, Heb. 13:17) 5. Warn the flock. Correct/Discipline (Acts 20:31, 1Thes. 5:14, Gal. 6:1) 6. Equip others for the work of the ministry. (Eph. 4:11-12)

1Ti 6:11 But as for you, O man of God, flee from evil things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 1Ti 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1Ti 6:13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 1Ti 6:14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
