Are You Wise? Most of us would likely say “No, not me.” But is that just modesty/humility, or is it really true? Consider Solomon’s request in 1Kings.

Are You Wise? Most of us would likely say “No, not me.” But is that just modesty/humility, or is it really true? Consider Solomon’s request in 1Kings 3:5-14. Certainly no Elder, Preacher, or Teacher would be worth much of anything without making the essence of Solomon’s request part of his regular prayer life. But what about everyone else? Is wisdom really a necessity for us also? cf. James 1:5.

What is “Wisdom” According to Webster: “accumulated philosophic or scientific learning” “ability to discern inner qualities and relationships” “good sense” “a wise attitude or course of action” The last one seems to more nearly fits the biblical usage of the term, James 3:13-18. “Wisdom” is not just what we “know” or even “understand”- it is applying that knowledge and understanding through wise choices in what we do, or don’t do, as the case may be.

Why is wisdom necessary for every Christian? How do we typically determine what to do in a particular situation or activity? More often than not, it goes like this: “Is there anything “wrong” with it?” Sounds good, but the assumption is that unless there is something wrong with “it,” then it must be okay. As long as “it” is not illegal, immoral, unethical, or doesn’t have a “thou shall not” attached, then “it” is usually a live option for us. But is this wise?

Why is wisdom necessary for every Christian? But we sometimes go on to: “How close can I get to the line between “right” and “wrong” without going over? Is this wise? We must remember that God judges intents and desires as well as activities, Hebrews 4:12; James 4:4. Or even, “How far over the line between right and wrong can I go without experiencing consequences?” Is this wise? Matthew 12:36

Why is wisdom necessary for every Christian? Because God expects us to walk wisely, Ephesians 5:15! This includes: -Walking “wisely” in imitation of God and Christ, vv.1-2 -Walking “wisely” in propriety as saints, vv.3-4 -Walking “wisely” in purity as inheritor, vv.5-6 -Walking “wisely” in the light, vv.7-12 -Walking “wisely” by pleasing the Lord, v.10 -Walking “wisely” knowing everything will be exposed, vv.13-14 (cf. Heb.4:13)

So…. Instead of making choices based on: -Is there a “thou shall not”? -How close can I get without sin? -How far can I go over without consequence? Why not make your choices wisely? >By being “careful” ? v.15 >By “making the most of your time” ? v.16 >By “understanding what the will of the Lord is” ? v.17 Are you going to be “wise” or “foolish” in making your choices?
