 Pronouncement of Judgment  Provision with Hope  Protection from Misery

Genesis 3:14-19

 God issues a divine penalty linked to the role of the perpetrator  There is a description of the consequences—defeat

Penalty: humiliation Consequence: defeat— at the hands of the woman’s offspring 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” What was the woman’s role in the Garden?  To be fruitful and multiply  To be a helper to Adam

 Genesis 3:16 ◦ 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”  Genesis 4:7 (God talking to Cain) ◦ If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” Penalty: pain in childbirth Consequence: defeat—at the hands of her husband

17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. What was Adam’s role in the Garden?  To reap from the Garden  To take care of and have dominion over the Garden

19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Penalty: lifelong toilsome labour Consequence: defeat—death and return to the ground from which he was made

Genesis 3:20-21

20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.  The name Eve comes from the Hebrew word that sounds like “life” or “living”  The animal skins picture atonement for sin ◦ Tabernacle sacrifices ◦ Priestly garments (Ex 28:4, 39-40)

Genesis 3:22-24

22 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

 the relationship of people to God ◦ Man and woman interact with God in fellowship and trust in the Garden ◦ Man and woman hide from God in shame (Gen 3:8-9)  the relationship of people to the environment ◦ The Garden provides food and an opportunity for dominion and caretaking (Gen 2:15) ◦ The earth rebels against Adam’s care and produces thorns and thistles (Gen 3:17-19) ◦ There is enmity between the woman and the animal world (Gen 3:15)  the relationships within the human family ◦ Adam and Eve recognize their distinctive identities and enjoy a nourishing harmony (Gen 2:23-25) ◦ There is now competition and confusion (Gen 3:16)

 Hinted Hope ◦ The promised Seed who would crush the serpent’s head ◦ The animal skin covering points to blood sacrifice which was later seen in the Tabernacle and the Law ◦ God’s gracious banishment from the Garden prevented Adam and Eve from living forever in sin  Final Hope Jesus

 Romans 5:1–2 ◦ Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

 Romans 8:19–23 ◦ For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

 In Marriage ◦ Ephesians 5:22–30 ◦ Christ loves the church as a pattern for the way husbands should love their wives ◦ Christ’s church submits to Him as a pattern for the way wives should submit to their husbands  In All Relationships ◦ Ephesians 4:32 ◦ Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

 By restoring Your Relationship with God ◦ Turn to God through faith in Christ  Eph 2:8-9; Rom 6:23 ◦ Then, live your life to please Him  Phil 2:12-13; Heb 13:20-21  By living “Christianly” with the Environment ◦ Obey the Creation Mandate  Gen 1:28; 2:15 ◦ Anticipate the fullness of purpose God intended for the Earth  Col 1:16-17; Isa 65; Rev 21  By demonstrating genuine Christian relationships ◦ Put others first  Phil 2:3; Rom 12:10 ◦ Husbands love, wives submit  Eph 5:22-30; Col 3:18-19; 1 Pet 3:1-7
