3 1920’S In the 1920’s fashion entered a modern era. The 1920s are characterized by two periods of fashion. In the early 1920s change slowly occurred for adopting new styles. From 1925, the public accepted the styles associated with the Roaring Twenties. These styles continued to characterize fashion until early in 1932.

4 WOMEN'S RIGHTS MOVEMENT During this time constricting fashions such as, corsets and other undergarments were replaced by more comfortable loose fitting clothes. Panties replaced Drawers and knickers. The chemise or camisole were used in place of the corset. For the first time in centuries, women's legs were seen with hemlines rising to the knee and dresses becoming more fitted The Women's Right Movement had a strong effect on Women's Fashion

5 A more masculine look became popular during this time including flattened breasts and hips, short hairstyles such as the bob cut, Eton Crop and the Marcel Wave. One of the first women to wear pants, cut her hair and reject the corset was Coco Chanel. She was probably the most influential woman in fashion of the 20th century. COCO CHANEL

6 MEN'S CLOTHING Men's clothing, especially the jackets, was influenced by uniforms that were worn in World War I. Men wore short suit jackets and pants that were narrow, short and straight. Upper Class Hats were worn based on class Middle Class Lower Class

7 JAZZ AGE The fashion industry was changed by the rise of jazz music. The massive changes in how people talked, walked, were entertained and saw themselves because of jazz, made the fashion industry of the day. One reason fashion had to follow what was happening in music was because whatever was happening in music influenced how people wanted to move or dance. Dances of the 1920s were very active and used a lot of movement. The clothing that the dancers needed, had to give them freedom and still look great when it was time to socialize

They were simple dresses that were “shapeless”, hiding a woman’s waist and putting emphasis on their hips. In these style's, sashes, swatches and hip length coats made the hips a point of emphasis. If prints were added, they were meant to reflect the shape of the dress that they were on.

Many woman wore silk stockings, some with patterns and vibrant colors of the rainbow. In place of the corset was a camisole, somewhat like the ones we wear today.

18 MEN’S FASHION!!!! Young men adopted a look with baggy plus fours with wide- legged trousers. Suits were simpler. They were unpadded jackets over the trousers, slimmer and the colors were lighter and brighter. In summer, men wore a straw hat or a stiff brimmed hat with light blazers. In the autumn and winter, men wore felt fedora hats.
