V = verb: action in the sentence S = subject: noun or pronoun performing the action DO = direct object: comes after an action verb and answers the question “what?”

Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Find the verb. -Is the verb a linking verb or action verb? -If the verb is a linking verb, you cannot have a direct object. Step 3: Ask “who or what is (insert verb)?” -The answer to this question is the subject. Step 4: Say “(insert subject) (insert verb) what?” -The answer is the direct object

Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrases. during the big game (during = preposition) Step 2: Find the action. will throw(verb) -Is “throw” a linking verb? NO Step 3: Who or what will throw? John (subject) Step 4: John will throw what? ball (direct object)

IO =indirect object: must be a noun or pronoun -You cannot have an indirect object without a direct object Follow steps 1-4 from previous pattern Step 5: After you find the DO, ask “to whom?” -The answer is the indirect object
