2 Active Reading

3 Consider the subject of the reading. Active Reading: Warm-up Consider the exact purpose why they are reading what they are reading. Prepare them to connect what they already know (old knowledge) to what they are about to read and learn (new knowledge).

4 Active Reading: Survey & Preview Preview and evaluate how the text is organized: Is it chronological, by topic, by cause and effect? Look for graphs, charts and pictures and consider why the author added these visual aids. Why are they important? Students should ask themselves questions about the content before starting to read: What do I already know about this topic? What am I expected to learn?

5 Active Reading: Monitor Comprehension Stop and identify the topic of the text, what the author wants them to know, and his/her purpose for writing about the topic. Self-test: Can the students list the basic facts from the text in their own words? If not they should considering reviewing the following: a.Was I ready to read this text? Did I warm-up and preview the text? b.Do I need to slow down or perhaps read aloud in order to focus on the text? c.Do I need to review some background information or find additional resources about the topic in order to understand it better? d.Do I need to collaborate with my teacher or classmates to better grasp the topic? Self-Talk: Tell them to talk to themselves about what they are reading.
