Put a signage of “Work/Scaffolding in Progress”. Make sure the ground can support the scaffolding. Check if the soil is loose.

Carefully carry all the tools and components to the location where the scaffolding will be erected. One damaged part might weaken the entire scaffolding; therefore, inspect all the tools properly. Check if the tools are free from dents, bends and cracks before erection.

List of required safety equipment are: Dust mask: Always wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling dust and other harmful gases. Safety gloves: Always wear gloves while handling tools, to avoid injuring your hands during work.

Ear plugs: Wear them while working to avoid hearing high volumes. Safety shoes: Wear safety footwear at all times when working around heavy equipment, to avoid crushing your toes and hurting your feet.

Protective Helmet: Wear hard hats when working at heights and at construction sites. This will help prevent bumps to the head due to free-falling objects and also prevent accidents due fire or electrical short circuits. Routinely inspect the hats for dents, cracks and deterioration. Always maintain hats in good working condition, replace hats after a heavy blow or electrical shock.

It is important to make sure that the sole board forms a firm foundation. This will ensure a strong erect scaffold.

Step 2: Place the sole board on the ground. Step 3: Pound the sole board with the help of base plate. Step 4: Shovel away extra loose earth to flatten the ground. Step 5: Firmly place the sole board and base plate on the ground.

13 Scaffolding Qualification Pack Assistant Mason/Teacher’s Resource -01 Copyright @Clearmaze Performance Criteria 13 PC 6: Check verticality of scaffold at first level of erection and correct (if required) before moving to the next level. To check the horizontal and vertical straight line of the scaffold, you should use mason level, gauge strip and plumb lines.

Check if there is proper support under every leg of every frame. Check if all baseplates and adjustment screws are in firm contact with their supporters. Check the level of the frames from all directions, using the plumb line. Each frame should be at right angles to each other. Check if all ties between the structure and scaffolding are secured.

16 Scaffolding Qualification Pack Assistant Mason/Teacher’s Resource -01 Copyright @Clearmaze Performance Criteria 16 PC 9: Follow standard procedure for dismantling of 3.6 m temporary scaffold. 1. Wear PPE including safety belt. 2. Climb on the outer most and top most ledger. 3. Open the clamps of the uppermost vertical props. 4. Take out the ledger. Similarly take out the other two ledgers connected with the uppermost vertical props. 5. Remove the upper outermost vertical props. Take out the safety pins from the outermost spigots. 6. Loosen the clamps from the lower outermost vertical props and take out the ledgers. 7. Remove the lower outermost vertical props. 8. To remove one pair of erection of scaffolding from one side, repeat steps 3 to 7. 9. Stack the props, ledgers, spigot pins separately in an appropriate place.

Preferably wash all the tools with water, then dry them. Especially those that are covered with mud. Wipe dry the iron and steel tools and components to avoid rust. Stack all components and tools at the same place to avoid untidiness and maintain discipline.

Stack all props, ledgers and spigot pins separately in an appropriate place. Sweep out dirt from the site at the end of each day’s construction work. Daily clean all restrooms. Keep stairways, passage ways and gangways free of material and obstructions. Remove nails from floors immediately after the use. Make sure broken nails and other pointy tools are not lying around unattended. Pick up and place debris in proper containers. Keep waste in metal cans or bins with self covering lids.

Step 1: Collect all components and tools. Keep them near scaffolding area. Step-2: Wear all safety equipment such as: Safety Jacket, goggles, helmet, gloves and safety belt.

III.Pound the base plate on the sole boards to compact the ground and level it further.

Step 5: Put the base plates on the sole boards and check the position of baseplates and sole boards with the help of measuring tape.

Two persons will hold two vertical props at marked area on the base plate. Two vertical props should be placed between 1 meter gap

He will then, tighten the clamp and similarly engage the other side of the ledger with the other vertical prop.

These should also be placed 1 meter apart. This will build a horizontal level of scaffolding. Step 9: Secure the vertical props Climb upon the ledgers and insert spigot on all 4 vertical props. Secure a safety pin aligning with the holes of the vertical prop with lower set of holes of the spigot.

Step 11: After the scaffolding is built, add the wooden planks, walk boards, and guard rails, toe rails for added protection in the upper levels of the scaffolding.

Store all equipment, components and tools in safe place. Do not keep unused equipment, components and tools lying around. Somebody can get hurt. Wear safety equipment at all times during work. Always use a double-over wet rope, for tying two bamboo poles. Do not use bent bamboo and steel rods for scaffolding. Make sure clamp is tight. Do not throw equipment, or other stuff from upper levels of scaffolding. You might hurt someone on the ground floor. Pass all require materials hand to hand.

An access ladder or equivalent safe access must be provided.

All planking or platforms must be overlapped or secured from movement. Scaffold plank must extend over their end. Slippery conditions on scaffolds shall be eliminated immediately after they occur. A safe distance from energized power lines shall be maintained. Tag lines shall be used to hoist materials to prevent contact. Scaffolds shall not be used during high wind and storms. Scaffolds shall not be moved while employees are on them. Loose materials, debris or tools shall not be accumulated to cause a hazard. Employees working on suspended scaffolds shall employ a fall-arrest system. Scaffold components shall not be mixed or forced to fit which may reduce design strength.

Some construction companies are bought themselves to erect scaffolding.

It is continuous process. Ideally, it requires the participation of everyone on the site. Good housekeeping prevents accidents and illnesses from occurring while working on a construction site.

Keep stairways, passageway and gangways free of material and obstructions. Pickup and place all debris or garbage in its proper container. Place trash and recyclable containers throughout the site and mark them for proper use. Keep waste in metal cans or bins with self-closing covers and remove debris at regular intervals. Frequently schedule the safe collection and removal of combustible waste. Cover or protect the structural openings like sumps, shafts etc. adequately.

Cup-lock scaffolding is a temporary network of frames, specially used for tall buildings where high access points are needed to complete the work.

Always choose rope of good quality. Coupler : a device for locking together the tubes of a tube and coupler scaffold. Guardrail : a barrier, consisting of top rails, mid rails, and posts, erected to prevent employees from falling off a scaffold platform or walkway to lower levels. Stair tower (Scaffold stairway/tower): a tower comprised of scaffold components and which contains internal stairway units and rest platforms. These towers are used to provide access to scaffold platforms and other elevated points such as floors and roofs. Each platform unit (e.g., scaffold plank, fabricated plank, fabricated deck, or fabricated platform) shall be installed so that the space between adjacent units and the space between the platform and the uprights is no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, except where the employer can demonstrate that a wider space is necessary (for example, to fit around uprights when side brackets are used to extend the width of the platform.
