3 Singer continued… Both Grandfathers were Rabbis He also was groomed for Hasidism Decided to be a writer instead After completing seminary studies, he worked as a journalist for the Yiddish press in many parts of Poland

4 Bashevis Singer Father was a Rabbi Mother, Bathsheba, was the daughter of a Rabbi Brother, Israel Joseph, was a well- known Yiddish writer Sister, Esther Kreitman, was also a writer

5 First Works The Family Moskat written in 1950- was based on Singer’s family. It translated the reality of an orthodox Jewish home into reality. “Satan in Goray” and “The Dybbuk and the Golem” written in 1955- treat the superstition and foolishness of eastern European peasants.
