Nervous System

Pennsylvania State standards  10.1.9 Analyze the interdependence existing among the body system.

What you will learn today!  Describe the parts and functions of the nervous system.  Discuss the problems of the nervous system.  Describe ways to care for the nervous system.

Warm-up  What do you know about the human nervous system?  How does the nervous system work?

Vocabulary  Neurons  Central Nervous system (CNS)  Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)  Somatic system  Autonomic system.

Neuron  On page 3 and 4 Neurons fill in the diagram.

Vocabulary  Neurons – Nerve cell that carries information.  Central Nervous system (CNS) – This system includes the brain and spine only.  Peripheral Nervous system (PNS) – Connects the brain and spine to all parts of the body.  Somatic system – With the action that you control.  Autonomic system – Deal with actions you do not control.

Parts of the Brain  Skull – protects the brain.  Cerebrum (side) largest part of the brain. Controls the senses, movement of muscles, thinking and speech.  Turn to pages 22 Nervous system functions, and pg23 Nervous system at work. Fill in the diagrams!

Parts of the Brain  Cerebellum – controls the balance, posture, and coordination.  Medulla – controls automatic body function (breathing, heart beating, digestion, and blood pressure.  Fill in diagrams on page 24 Exploring your brain, and page 25 Nervous system.

Lobes of the brain  There are three lobes of the human brain.  There is two Hemisphere left and right.  Dividing the hemisphere is the longitudinal fissure.

Middle of the brain  Midbrain – is the Pons, Medulla, and Brain stem.  Pictures are from AMA website http://www.am a- assn.org/ama/p ub/category/71 49.html

Problems of the nervous system.  Head injury – Blow to the head which violent jarred the brain to hit the skull. Called a concussion.  Spinal cord injury – Damage from the head, neck, or body. Paralysis of all parts of the body may happen.  Nerve inflammation – followed by minor injury which pinches the nerve causing pain in signal part of the body.

Diseases of the Nervous system  Non injury related. Degenerative – that means become worse over time.  Sclerosis – s of the spine  Multiple sclerosis (MS) protective covering of nerves are damaged and the nerves do not work.  Alzheimer’s – Inflamed of the brain and death of neurons.  Meningitis – Is the lining of the brain that is inflaming and can lead to death if untreated.

Disease of Nervous system  Epilepsy – Cause the person to have seizures. This can be controlled with medication.

Care of the Nervous system  Get enough sleep.  Avoid alcohol an other drugs  Play safely  Wear seatbelts when drive in automobiles  Obey all traffic rules and safety rules.  Wear helmet when riding bike or motorcycle.

WILT  With the information in your Human workbook and your notes. Write a 2 page paper on the Nervous System. Answer the following question by explaining:  Paragraph 1: What are the parts of the Nervous system and how do they work?  Paragraph 2: What parts of the body need the nervous system?  Paragraph 3: What are problems of the nervous system?  Paragraph 4: What are some of the ways to care for the nervous system?  Also the crossword puzzle Control Central is extra credit if it is filled in correctly. Found on page 26.
