7. Your role as a Student Academic Representative Your role as an Academic Rep is incredibly important and is there to ensure that the voice of the students on your course is heard. You will be responsible for gathering the feedback of students and feeding this back to the University and Students’ Union at key meetings throughout the year. It’s not just about making sure this feedback is brought to the University; you also need to make sure that students understand what action is being taken as a result. 7

8. Meeting attendance One of your main opportunities for feedback will be Faculty meetings: Student Staff Liaison Meetings (SSLMs): All Academic Representatives will be invited to these meetings and they will present an informal opportunity to feedback on any concerns or ideas which have been raised by your course mates. Course Management Committees (CMCs): These meetings provide formal course management and quality assurance. A select number of Academic Representatives will be elected at the previous SSLM to go forward to the CMC. Issues which were not resolved at the SSLM will also be raised here for discussion 8

9. Meeting Attendance After each SSLM and CMC each Academic rep is required to complete an electronic meeting report. This is to ensure we know what’s going on with your course and will also allow us to identify key trends and chase up any issues which haven’t been addressed. 10. Meeting Attendance Student Voice Forums The Students’ Union will run these institution wide meetings every 6 weeks and will alternate between the Stoke and Stafford campuses. These meetings are designed to allow Academic Representatives to provide an active contribution to learning and teaching at Staffordshire University. Rather than feeding back on individual and course issues these meetings will look at what different aspects of your Student Experience should look like. 10

Benefits There are loads of benefits to being a Student Academic Representative: Fantastic opportunity to gain key employability skills; communication at different levels, presentation, and negotiation and diplomacy to name a few! You have the ability to actively shape your course by providing key, and relevant feedback from students on your course to your Faculty. This will allow the University to make changes that reflect your needs. Your hard work will be recognised through our Volunteering Scheme, Involved. 14. Gathering Feedback A fantastic way to link up with like minded students on your course is to join or start an Academic Society. Setting up a society for your course can allow you to gain experience in the world of work alongside your peers. You can do this by organizing trips to talk to professionals in your chosen subject, gaining an insight into what they do on a day-to-day basis. Organizing these events will give you skills in leadership, organization and teamwork which will benefit one another as well as yourself. This will help you to take a proactive approach to your role as an academic rep, not only will you have the opportunity to gain feedback from students at society meetings but will also be able to learn from each other, and become experts in your own education Academic Societies 14

15. School Lead Representatives Your School Lead Representatives are here to support you. Each School will have one representative who will be the conduit between Academic Reps, the University and the Students’ Union. School Lead Representatives can help with lots of different things;  if you’re struggling to engage with students and gain feedback  if you feel an issue you’ve raised hasn’t been dealt with or  you’re just not quite sure what to do! 15
