10 Physical Environment A physical environment is the area around you and the things that are in it such as mountains, lakes, ponds, streams, trees, etc.

12 Mountains The Appalachian Mountains run from Maine to Georgia.

13 Peninsula A piece of land that is nearly surrounded by water. The state of Florida is a peninsula.

14 Island Land that is surrounded by water on all sides.

15 Hawaii is an Island

16 Plains A large area of flat or gently rolling land.

17 Plateau An area of high land that contains flat land.

18 Valley Land between mountains or hills.

19 Piedmont The gently rolling land at the base of mountains.

20 Gulf A large section of ocean.

21 River A body of water that flows downhill. The Mississippi River is the second longest river in the United States.

22 Mouth of a River Place where the water enters the ocean or lake. mouth

23 Delta A delta is a landform where the mouth of a river flows into an ocean, sea, desert, estuary, lake or another river. delta

24 Bank Is the usually rocky shore of a river.river

25 Bay Ocean water that extends into land.

26 Lake A body of standing water that is surrounded by land.

30 5 Physical Regions of Georgia Mountains (Blue Ridge) Piedmont (Atlanta, our state capitol is here) Coastal Plains (Land by the coast) Oceans (Atlantic Ocean) Swamps and Marshes (Okefenokee Swamp is located in Georgia)

31 Urban Area City land and spaces. Savannah and Atlanta are Urban Areas.

32 Suburban Area An area next to or close to a city. They have less people than an urban area.

33 Rural Area Land away from the city. They have fewer people than suburban areas and more open spaces. Guyton, Ga. Is a rural area.

34 Native Americans Found in Georgia Long ago, the Cherokee Indians lived in the Appalachian Mountains and valleys. They depended on the forests, rivers, and rich soil to survive. They planted their crops in the piedmont area.

35 Cherokee Homes The Cherokee built towns along rivers and streams. Some towns had more than a hundred houses. Cherokee families had two homes. In the summer they lived in large houses with peaked roofs and in the winter they lived in small, round houses that were built for warmth.

36 Sequoyah A Cherokee Indian who invented a way to write the Cherokee language.

37 Trail of Tears In the 1830’s, the United States forced most of the Cherokee to leave their homes. To traveled hundreds of miles west to what is now called Oklahoma. Four Thousand Cherokee died. This event is called the Trail of Tears.

38 Haudenosaunee Indians Lived in the Northeastern forest of the United States. In the summer, they grew crops such as corn, beans, and squash. They stored their harvest to eat during the winter. The men hunted for meat. The animal skins were used for clothes.

39 Haudenosaunee Houses The Haudenosaunee Indians lived in Longhouses. They were like apartment houses. Six to ten families lived together in a longhouse.

40 Hiawatha Hiawatha was an Indian leader who helped the Peacemaker spread his message of PEACE. They would plant a tree called the TREE of PEACE to help the Indians nations of their promise to stop fighting.

41 Pilgrims In 1620, a group of settlers landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts. They were called Pilgrims. They had sailed from England on a ship called the MAYFLOWER.

42 Spanish Colonies People from Spain came to California. The Spanish priests started missions. A mission is a community built around a church. In time, the culture of California became a mix of Spanish and Indian cultures.

43 Working for Rights A RIGHT is a freedom. SLAVERY is a cruel system under which people are bought and forced to work. FEDERICK DOUGLAS and SOJOURNER TRUTH spoke out against slavery.

44 Civil Rights Civil rights are rights that countries protect for citizens. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought to change unfair laws for African Americans. Susan B. Anthony worked for women’s rights in 1920.
