1 Math Order of Operations Day 1

2 What Are You Learning? I CAN evaluate expressions using the order of operations.

3 Why Do You Need To Know This? Using the order of operations is important because it allows you to get the right answer to various numerical expressions. Numerical expressions can be used to solve many types of real world problems in which the order in which a problem is solved is important.

4 Vocabulary Numerical expression--A combination of numbers and operations. – Examples: 4 + 20 - 7 (2+3) - 7 (6 × 2) ÷ 20

5 Vocabulary To avoid having different answers for the same expression, mathematicians have agreed on a Order of Operations. Order of Operations—Rules to follow when more than one operation is used in a numerical expression.

6 Order of Operations – Parentheses (or other grouping symbols) – Exponents – Multiplication – Division When multiplication and division are in the same problem, work from left to right. – Addition – Subtraction When addition and subtraction are in the same problem, work from left to right.

7 Easy way to remember: P lease Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally –P–Parentheses –E–Exponents –M–Multiplication –D–Division –A–Addition –S–Subtraction

8 Which operation would you do first? a. 400 – 5[12 + 9] b. 26 – 8 + 14 c. 17 + 3 6 d. 69 + 57 ÷ 3 + 16 4

9 Evaluate each expression. a. 2 × 9 + 5 × 3 b. 18 ÷ 3 6 c. (9 – 4) ÷ 5 d. 9 – 4 ÷ 2 + 16 e. 81 ÷ (13 – 4)

10 6 + 10 ÷ 2 - 5 1. 0 2. 3 3. 13 4. 6

11 4 + 8 ÷ 4 - 2 1. 1 2. 6 3. 4 4. 0

12 5(4 – 2) 3 + 12 ÷ 4 1. 15 2. 25 3. 43 4. 13

13 Can You Figure This Out? Ruby evaluates 12 ÷ 2 + 2 5 and gets 15. When she checks using her calculator, she gets 16. Which is correct? Explain.

14 Which of the following number sentences is not true? a. 3 + 4 × 8 ÷ 2 = 19 b. 6 × 3 – (5 + 9) = 4 c. 56 ÷ 8 × 3 + 3 = 24 d. 5² - 3² × 2 = 32

15 Which expression has a value of 18? a. 3 2 + 4 b. (18 – 10) ÷ 4 + 15 c. 4 2 + 3 – 2 d. 27 – 13 2 + 17(6 – 5)

16 Choose the number that makes the following number sentence true. (3 + 3)² + 44 ÷ ? = 40 a. 2 b. 4 c. 11 d. 18
