BWGHC PARTICIPATION Blacktown LGA has the highest urban population of Indigenous Australians in NSW, which makes it a good place to start inspiring positive change in the community. Raise awareness of the health disadvantages of Aboriginal people and help achieve social justice for the Indigenous community. ART FOR HEALING & TRAUMA RECOVERY Importance of art in dream time in aboriginal and indigenous culture. Art therapy can assist the Indigenous community to heal by connecting them to their cultural identity as they learn and apply the traditional ways of life, spiritual beliefs & values through various art forms. ADDRESSING THE INEQUALITY Due to the European invasion and the discriminative policies regarding Indigenous Australians, many face social and health disadvantages compared to non-Indigenous Australians and this is something that must be addressed through social action, political campaigns and other movements. INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY EVENTS Indigenous Market Day (First Sunday of each month) It starts at 9.30-3.30pm at Bare Island, La Perouse Sydney. The Market holds various workshops (weaving etc.), stalls, dances and performances. Homeground Sydney (April) Message stick: an annual multi-arts held at the Sydney Opera House, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Guringai Festival (May) Aims to raise awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people living in the Northern Sydney Region, it includes art exhibitions, films, performances, environmental walks and workshops across Sydney (A day before Sorry Day, 26 th of May) and the second week of sorry day in July of each year. NAIDOC Week (July) NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievement of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Corroboree Sydney (November) Corroboree Sydney is an annual Sydney festival that combines leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, writers, dances and musicians as they showcase their unique talents and flair.
