5 Wildlife in Central India (Madhya Pradesh) BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK It is a veritable crown of the rich wildlife heritage of Madhya Pradesh. It is located about 195 km off Jabalpur and 210 km off Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The exceptional characteristic of this park is that though it is smaller in comparison to Kanha National Park or any of the other parks of Madhya Pradesh, it hosts almost the same number of tigers or any other wildlife species! 7 KANHA NATIONAL PARK O One the greatest wildlife reserves in India. Kanha National Park is located in the Mandla and Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh. Spreading 1,940sq. Kms of deciduous forest, Savannah grassland, hills, and gentle meandering rivers – and home to more than 200 tigers and leopards, 350 barasingha (swamp deer) and 22,000 spotted deer and more than 300 species of birds, Kanha is receiving increasing a ttention from the tourists. No Indian Nature Reserve can guarantee tiger spotting such as the Kanha National Park. Infact half of the tourists visit the park for the tigers only.

8 How to reach: By Plane: Kanha Park can also be reached through flights. Some of the nearby airports are: Nagpur (300kms/06:30hrs) Raipur(260kms/06:00hrs) Jabalpur (165kms/04:00hrs) Travelling to Kanha by road :- Nearest cities from Kanha National Park are Jabalpur, Raipur, Nagpur. Jabalpur & Nagpur is on National Highway-7 which connects Varanasi from Kanyakumari. Anyone can reach Kanha from these cities by surface transfers. Among them Jabalpur is the closest to Kanha Tiger Reserve i.e, about 165kms. and road condition is also favorable.

9 Wildlife in Western India (Rajasthan) Ranthambore Tiger Reserve: In the desert Indian state of Rajasthan it is probably the best place in the world to photograph the mighty tiger. It is surrounded by the Vindhya and Aravalli hill ranges and lies on the outer fringes of the Thar Desert. Famous for its tiger population, the entire area is covered with sprawling tracts of desert and semi-desert vegetation. Originally a hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur, Ranthambore was declared a game sanctuary in 1955. In 1980s, it became a national park and was listed among the reserves protected under Project Tiger (1973). Presently the Kaila Devi Sanctuary, also famous for its tigers, and the Man Singh Sanctuary form a part of Ranthambore Reserve.

10  How to Reach Ranthambore  The airport nearest to Ranthambore is the Jaipur Airport, which about 145 km away. Regular flights are available from Jaipur to other destinations in Indian including Delhi, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Jodhpur, and Udaipur.  The nearest rail junction, on the other hand, is the Sawai Madhopur Railway Station, which is at a distance of 11 km from the park. 11 The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary It is also known as the Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the best bird sanctuaries in the world. Created in 1890 by the Maharaja of Bharatpur as a bird hunting reserve, this sanctuary is home to more than 300 species of birds. Moreover, the park also attracts thousands of migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, China, Afghanistan, Central Asia and Tibet every year. If you travel to Bharatpur during October to February, you will be able to catch sight of some famous bird species like the Siberian crane, the Siberian Greyleg Goose and the Chinese Bareheaded Goose. Besides, the park is also home to birds like the Pelican, Painted Stork, Pipit, Warbler, Wagtail, White Ibis and the Marsh Harrier.

13 How to reach Bharatpur Air: The nearest airport is Agra, which is about 55 km away. Rail: Regular rail services connect Bharatpur with several cities on Delhi- Mumbai trunk route. Rail services also connect Bharatpur with Jaipur and Agra. Road: A good network of bus services links Bharatpur with several cities within and outside Rajasthan.

14 Wildlife in Southern India (Karnataka & Kerala) Bandipur National Park Situated halfway down the Mysore-Ooty highway, Bandipur National Park is one of the most popular reserves of the country. Rich variety of flora and fauna in the park allures tourists from all over the world. Bandipur National Park was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1973 and after a period, it was covered under the Project Tiger. Later, the park got the title of National park in 1974. Bandipur national park is noted for its diverse wildlife inhabitants and some rare species of flora. In short, the park is a paradise for wildlife lovers as well as for bird- watchers. The park provides a soothing climate throughout the year but it is advisable to choose the clothing according to the climate. Monsoon in this region is unpredictable but usually hits the area from June to September.

16 PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK It is situated in the southern state of Kerala, and is one of the most captivating wildlife parks in the world. It is famous for its elephant and tiger population, apart from the numerous wild animals and birds. The park is also considered perfect for professional and amateur wildlife photography. Full of lakes, temples, and other tourist spots, the park is one of the better-managed wildlife sanctuaries in the country and in the enviable position of being a national park as well as a protected tiger reserve. The best months to visit the park are from October to April. Periyar is today one of the most exciting biosphere reserves with a large variety of flora and fauna in the country.

17 How to Reach Periyar The airports nearest to Periyar are Madurai (140 km) and Cochin (200 km). Cochin is a major airport with regular connections with other Indian cities as well as the cities in the Gulf countries. The nearest major rail junction, on the other hand, is Kottayam (120 km). Periyar is connected with most of the cities in the region as well as other parts of the country with regular trains.
