2 Background Cultural diversity included in curricula of many medical schools, but ….. 1. Lack of training of faculty members 2. Lack of organisational policy for structural implementation

3 Objectives C2ME 1. To develop, test and implement Teach-the-Teacher modules on cultural diversity in the participating European countries. 2. To develop test and implement a policy for structural embedding of cultural competence training in medical schools.

4 Methods C2ME 1. Develop TtT modules: -Framework teaching skills: Delphi study -Teacher assessment -Online modules & 5 Pilot TtT courses 2. Develop policy for structural embedding CC in medical school: -Assessment of policies in medical schools -Policy guidelines to implement CC

5 Main results Delphi study (34 Experts; 75 % consensus) All medical teachers should have: Knowledge of determinants of health Awareness of own ethnic and cultural background Empathy for patients regardless of background Empathy for students of diverse background Awareness that teachers are role models Ability to communicate about individuals non-stereotypical Ability to engage, motivate and let participate all students Ability to critically reflect on own values and beliefs

6 Main results Teacher assessment N = 888 medical teachers 56 % culturally competent 60 % feels culturally competent 78 % interested in receiving CC training 86 % feels that integrating CC in the medical curriculum is important

7 Tools produced C2ME ● Teacher assessment tool ● Policy assessment tool ● Online modules ● Face to Face courses ● Guidelines to integrate CC in curriculum

8 Gaps identified 1.Competency to teach CC: + Create a safe and open atmosphere + Engage, motivate participation of all students -Knowledge about disparities in health and care -Address conflict in case of different cultural views patient and care provider 2. Integration of CC in curriculum -No CC training for teachers -Current curricula are not adequately teaching CC

9 Priorities for future interventions ● Teach the teachers ● Integrate CC in medical curriculum - CC included as explicit aim in the curriculum development - CC is included in the overall organisational strategy of the medical school ● Diverse classroom
