? ?? ? Imagine if… There were no airplanes… What would we need to fly???

Four Forces of Flight!!!

Four Forces of Flight Source: “Charlie Brown’s Third Super Book of Questions and Answers”, 1978, p. 121, cropped.

? ?? ? Is there anything special about a wing that helps make flight possible?

Thrust moves the plane forward. The forward motion, over the wing’s shape, creates lift. Lift makes the plane rise. Drag slows a plane. Weight/Gravity pulls the plane back toward the ground. Four Forces of Flight Yes – its shape!!!

? ?? ? How does a propeller create thrust?

Source: http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/aboutus/wonder_of_flight/propeller.htmlhttp://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/aboutus/wonder_of_flight/propeller.html -The twisted wing pushes air backward, moving the propeller and plane forward. -“A propeller is like a spinning wing. Instead of pushing air behind a plane, the airfoil shaped blades pull an airplane forward just as an airplane’s wings lift it upward. The amount of thrust created by a propeller depends on how fast and at what angle its blades cut through the air.”airfoil

? ?? ? How does a jet engine create thrust?

Source: http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/aboutus/wonder_of_flight/engine.htmlhttp://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/aboutus/wonder_of_flight/engine.html -The many twisted blades suck in air, compress it, and pushes it out theback, moving the plane forward. -“A jet engine uses a gas turbine to drive a fan that sucks in air, mixes it with burning fuel, and then blasts the expanded air-gas mixture out the back.”
