12
Background Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most prevalent and persistent issues facing women and girls globally. Gender violence is a reality in Southern Africa according the research conducted by NGO’S and Government statistics. ACSA identified women and gender issues as one of the strategic priorities The Mothers’ Union and other women's groups through their work in the communities also identified GBV as an issue that need to be prioritized
13
MOTHERS’ UNION GBV prevention and Response We adopted a multi-sectoral approach on provincial and diocesan level to support our gender based violence prevention and response strategies. We embarked on numerous provincial and diocesan partnership activities which include the following : Themed based Women’s day Campaign – “ Come and meet the Jewel at the well” Seminars Information session on GBV Workshops Special Church Services

Partnership activities Presentation by Hope Africa at 49th Provincial Council held in the Diocese of Saldanha Bay Bible studies on self discovery for women to deal abuse based on the Women at the Well story TAMAR bible Studies Community Marches : The Mothers’ Union campaigned against the senseless killing and raping of the elderly mothers

COME AND MEET THE JEWEL AT THE WELL Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman John 4: 1- 28 “The Woman at the Well” in the Bible in most sermons she is portrayed as sinful and not worthy to be in the presence of God. Even Eve is always fingered as the seductress and the disobedient one who influenced innocent Adam to commit an act of sin which had dire consequences for the entire human race. It spoke to us about name calling and negative stereotyping of women. We challenged ourselves to find ways to turn the negative perception the church sometimes has of women on its head by using the same woman at the well in a positive light. The theme “Come, Meet the Jewel at the Well” spoke to us and touched us deeply. The metaphor of the “Jewel” speaks of women as being precious, worthy, strong, sought-after, multi-faceted, worthy of nurturing and everlasting. We hope that if the story of the woman is language and interpreted differently, the church community will begin to focus on affirming women and girl children by celebrating their strengths and gifts, rather than their perceived weaknesses. We hope that it will change long held perceptions that supported the subservience of women.
16
COME AND MEET THE JEWEL AT THE WELL A journey of self-discovery Ask God questions to Discover your True Self God will always be there when we come to Him with questions. So don’t be afraid to ask when you’re are seeking your True Self. Ask God the following questions: - Why am I here? -What do you want me to do with my life ? -What do you want me to learn? - How do I overcome my fears, self –doubts and insecurities ? - What steps do I need to take to further understand myself and God?
