Mom: Look at this news article. It’s about computer addiction among teens. What if Jiho is getting addicted to his computer? Dad: Computer addiction? Hmm... Jiho does spend a lot of time in front of the computer. Mom: Yes, and he’s at his computer right now. I prepared his dinner over an hour ago, and he still hasn’t come out of his room to eat it. Does he expect to have his food brought to him? I think I’d better go have a talk with him. Am I a Computer Addict? What are Jiho’s parents worried about? They are worried that Jiho may be addicted to his computer.

(In Jiho’s room) Mom: Jiho, how many times have I told you not to play games all day? Jiho: Mom, I’ve been searching online for some material that I need for school. I just started playing games a few minutes ago. Mom: That’s what you always say. Jiho: It’s the truth, Mom. I really haven’t been playing for very long. Mom: Okay, but I’m afraid you don’t know when to stop using the computer. You even skip dinner when you’re on your computer. Jiho: Sorry about that, but there’s always so much to do online.
5
Mom: Well, your father and I never see you doing anything but playing games and surfing the Internet. Jiho: But Mom, that’s just a small part of what I do on my computer. For one thing, I’ve been studying English online. It’s cheap and convenient, and it’s helpful to improve my grades. Mom: Hmm... I have noticed that your grades have improved lately. Jiho: Another great thing about my computer is that it helps me keep in touch with old friends by chatting online. Since we all started high school, we don’t have much chance to get together as often as we used to. What does Jiho think about using computers? He thinks using the computer offers many benefits, such as studying online and keeping in touch with old friends.

Mom: Well, I’m still worried. You know Sebin who lives next door? His parents say he spends so much time chatting and blogging that he can’t keep up with his studies. They don’t know what to do with him anymore. Jiho: Mom, are you saying that I should have my computer time taken away just because some other kids use their computers too much? Mom: No, I’m not saying that you should stop completely. I’m just worried about the amount of time you spend in front of your computer. Why don’t you try using it less? Jiho: I feel uneasy when I’m not using it. Doing things on my computer has become an important part of my everyday life. Mom: That’s exactly what I’m worried about. I just read this article about computer addiction. It says that feeling uneasy or upset when you can’t use computers is one of the symptoms. We should have you checked out to make sure you’re not addicted. Why does Jiho’s mother think he might be a computer addict? Because Jiho feels uneasy when not using computers, which is one of the symptoms of computer addiction.

Jiho: I’m not a computer addict, Mom! All of my friends use computers just as much as I do. I’m completely normal. Mom: That still doesn’t justify it, Jiho. You almost never go out and get any exercise. What’s more, you hardly ever talk with the rest of the family. When was the last time we spent time together? Jiho: Hmm... I guess it’s been a long time. Mom: Your father and I want to spend more time with you. We want to know what you’re thinking and feeling. Jiho: I understand what you’re saying, but I really don’t think I use my computer so much that you need to worry about me. Mom: Okay, but I’d still like you to read this article and think about what it says. Please? Jiho: Okay, Mom. I’ll have a look at it. What does Jiho’s mother want Jiho to do? She wants him to spend more time with his family and think about the problem of computer addition.
