2 This is the barometer of the boys’ desire to return to civilization. At the beginning of the novel, the boys desire to be rescued and returned to civilization is represented through their overcoming obstacles to build the fire. Allowing the fire to go out shows the boys have lost sight of civilization.

3 The primal instinct of savagery existing within all human beings. The belief in the beast becomes stronger as they become more savage.

4 Ralph represents order, leadership and civilization Piggy represents science and technology Jack represents savagery and the desire for power Simon represents natural goodness and the prophetic

5 Roger represents brutality and bloodlust Littluns represents the common people Bigguns represents the ruling class and political leaders

6 Represents the power behind science and the intellect of society. Becomes the actual power needed to start the fire the boys need to signal ships at sea. When Jack steals the glasses (or the power), then Ralphs group is left helpless.

7 Symbolizes the power of evil. Becomes a physical manifestation of the beast. Tells Simon of the evil lying in every human heart is the true evil.

8 Becomes the symbol for civilization and order Used as the actual representation of democracy on the island. In the beginning, the conch is used to call the members together and to call official meetings of the group. The destruction of the conch shows the degeneration of civilization on the island.

9 Man is by nature a savage beast that can only be controlled through the formation of the laws of society. Do you agree?
