Sir Arthur Chichester Sir John Davies He was a poet He was a lawyer He was Attorney-General of Ireland Strong supporter of plantation Acquired his own land in Fermanagh and Tyrone Kings chief official in Ireland A.K.A Lord Deputy An experienced soldier First to suggest a plantation should be tried in Ulster Original plan was only for a small number of settlers to come and to give the majority of land to the Irish.

What is The Plantation of Ulster? Thousands of people from Scotland and also England went across The Irish Sea to live in Ulster during King James I’s reign. He was already the king of Scotland but then in 1603 he became King of England. He planted people from England and Scotland in Ulster because he wanted to change it. What Counties did it involve? Armagh Tyrone Fermanagh Derry Donegal Cavan What?

Why? Why have a plantation in Ulster? I will be rich!! The plantation was an attempt by King James to colonise Ireland by taking out Irish citizens. He thought it would stop all threats of a ‘rebellion’. It was not free, it was very expensive! The King thought that the Irish and the Spanish would team together. Now that he was in possession of the six counties he could choose who would receive them. He thought his plan was unbeatable! He thought Ulster would become richer, because the King would make more money from more taxes from the English and Scottish settlers.

Where did the settlers live? Typically the English settlers would live on Land owned by the English and the same would apply to the Scottish. In the Plantation the settlers and their families established many towns in Ulster. For example: – The London companies where in charge of Coleraine and Derry. –James Hamilton put Strabane on the map –The Acheson family founded a village in county Armagh now know as Market hill. Where?

The settlers showed that they where not afraid of the Irish attacking them as some of them refused to live in villages where they would be safer from attack. We are here Londonderry Strabane Markethill Where?

The Plantation was more successful in some places than others - Some men who received land found themselves returning home to England and Scotland because they sold out their land. It was extremely hard to persuade the English families to live on their land because often the land was mountainous and would have been hard to farm and live off. Legacy
10
There is proof of the Plantation being a success as some of the monuments created during the plantation are still standing today. For example: The Derry Walls (Walls built around the town of Derry ) Plantation Castles Plantation Churches
