The Christian’s use of the Old Testament

The Old Testament is Not Binding on Christians Today The Old Covenant/Testament was taken away that a new one might be established (Hebrews 8:7,13; 10:9; 9:15) We are no longer under the Old Testament’s laws. (Colossians 2:14; Galatians 3:24-25; 5:4; Romans 7:1-7)

The Old Testament Should Still be used by Christians today It was written for our learning. (Rom. 15:4) It is inspired by God and is profitable for us (2 Timothy 3:16-17) It is vital to an understanding of the New Testament (Hebrews 10:1, 10; John 5:39) Its prophecies are strong evidence for the inspiration of the Bible (2 Peter 1:19-21)

The Old Testament Should Still be used by Christians today Many of its principles are brought over in the New Testament (James 2:8; Leviticus 19:18; 1 Corinthians 14:34; 9:9; 1 Tim. 5:18) It serves to warn us against repeating the mistakes of God’s people in times past (1 Corinthians 10:1-11; Heb. 3-4)

So what about using the Old Testament to condemn tattoos, regulate modesty or discuss instrumental music? Tattoos are condemned in Leviticus 19:28 –All of the other Laws in the immediate context are specifically included in the New Testament or relate to New Testament principles. –What can we LEARN from Leviticus 19:28? Covering the thigh with trousers was required for the priests (Exodus 28:42) –We are not under this law. –Can we learn something from it about what constitutes nakedness in God’s eyes?

So what about using the Old Testament to condemn tattoos, regulate modesty or discuss instrumental music? Instrumental music The Old Testament commanded using instruments of music in worship to God (Psalm 150) The reasons for praising God in song are laid out in the Old Testament (Psalms 47:6-7; 108:3-4) The Old Testament prophesies that the New Testament age would be one of singing (Isa. 12:1-5) The New Testament commands only singing, not playing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)

Here’s what the Lord says in the Old Testament about New Testament Christians “…they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34) Do you know Him?
