CHEMISTRY MONDAY, 9/21 As you come in, please take out: 1.a laptop 2.Paper for a warm up 3.Pencil 4.Xcel activity for today Take a look at your slope calculations in your Mass vs. Volume lab, make note of what your values were for lead and aluminum on your warm up paper TURN IN your lab!

WARM UP 1)The diameter of Earth is 1.3 x 10 4 km. What is the diameter expressed in decimeters?

WARM UP 1)1.3 x 10 8 dm

DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS HOMEWORK Graded 5 problems. Not great results. Quiz this week – NO dimensional analysis 1.Accurate measuring 2.Significant figures 3.density Test next week – YES, there will be dimensional analysis. If you would like to redo the homework, you can. Here’s how it will work.

DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS HOMEWORK 1.Come in during office hours for a tutoring session. 1.Monday 9/21, 2:30 – 3:30 2.Wednesday 9/23, 3:30 – 4:30 3.Thursday 9/24, 2:30 – 3:30 4.Monday 9/28, 2:30 – 3:30 2.You will receive a new, blank homework assignment that will be completed during the tutoring session 3.This must be completed before next Tuesday 9/29.

MASS & VOLUME LAB Today we will learn how to use Excel to complete the following: Importing data into Excel Creating a scatterplot Adding multiple sets of data on one graph Formatting your graph Adding Trendlines

EXPORT CLASS DATA INTO EXCEL A.Select/highlight all of the class data from Google spreadsheet 1.You can also export the data by clicking File -> Download As -> Microsoft Excel B.Right click, select “copy” 1.or “Ctrl C” C.Open Xcel 1.Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office Folder -> Xcel D.Right click upper left cell, select “paste” 1. or “Ctrl V” 2.Data should magically appear in Xcel

CREATING A GRAPH FROM DATA A.Click the “Insert” tab on the top navigation bar B.Select “Scatter Chart” 1.Choose “Scatter with only Markers” C.A blank rectangle will appear:

A.Right click on the blank square B.Choose “Select Data” 1.A new “Edit Series” box should appear 2.You are going to add 2 series – 1 for aluminum and 1 for lead. C.Click the “Add” button D.Lets add lead first. 1.Name the series “Lead” 2.Click on the “Select Range” button under the “Series X values” 3.Another new “Edit Series” box should appear 4.On the actual Xcel data, highlight the data that will go on the x-axis for aluminum (the volume data) i.Click the little icon button ii.Previous box should appear again 5.Repeat step 4-5 for the “Series Y values” 6.Click ok in the “Edit Series box” 7.Click ok in the “Select Data Source” box. ADDING A DATA SET

Repeat the steps on the previous slide to add the data set for Aluminum ADDING ANOTHER DATA SET

FORMATTING YOUR GRAPH A.Under the Design tab, 1.select “Chart Layouts” and i.choose “Layout 1” B.Double click on the different parts of your graph to change the formatting 1.Ex: Double click on the X-axis values to: i.Change the minimum & maximum ii.Change the scaling 2.Ex: Double click on the “Axis Title” to name the axis (volume or mass)

ADD A TRENDLINE (EQUATION AND R 2 ) A.Right click on a data point for lead 1.Select “Add trendline” 2.Choose a “Linear” line 3.Make sure your y-intercept is at 0.0 4.Select that you want to display i.“Equation on chart” and ii.“R 2 value on chart” 5.Repeat steps 1-4 for aluminum 6.You can also customize the name of each trendline if you want.

EXCEL ACTIVITY Save this activity to your personal Liberty document folder. We will do more with Excel in the future and this is a great resource.

DENSITY HOMEWORK (YELLOW) Due next class QUIZ: Accurate measurements Sig figs Density vocabulary
