1 Distributed Multimedia Information Systems and Applications Lab. (TUC/MUSIC) Lab site: http://www.music.tuc.grhttp://www.music.tuc.gr Short description: http://www.music.tuc.gr/About.show http://www.music.tuc.gr/About.show

Lab Personnel http://www.music.tuc.gr/People.show 2 Faculty Members – Professor S. Christodoulakis – Assistant Professor K. Mania –.. 6 Laboratory Staff – All with MEng and many years of experience in Software Engineering and R&D 2 Collaborating Researchers Many graduate and undergraduate students

TUC/MUSIC Established in 1990- first year the Department accepted students Pivotal Role in TUC: – Created the first infrastructure for the Internet and e- mail in TUC Run it for 6 years with EU R&D funding – Personnel supported the labs for all the software courses in ECE for more than 10 years – Brought and run the first EU R&D projects to TUC

TUC/MUSIC People trained at TUC/MUSIC were the first people to man: – The Network Center of TUC – The Computing Center of TUC – The Dept of ELKE for economic management of EU programs

Courses Supported Supports the labs of all the core Software Engineering oriented courses (required) of ECE: – Introduction to programming – Abstract data Types and Object Oriented Programming – Design and Development of Information Systems – Data Bases All have 50% Lab weight, required passing, repeating labs in case of failure

Advanced Courses in Software Engineering and Graphics Design and Development of Web Applications Design and Development of Services in the Internet Human Computer Interaction and Design Graphics Most Graduate Thesis and Diploma Thesis in those areas are done in the context of EU R&D programs and are also supported by the lab staff

Lab Graduates About 1/3 of the lab graduates work in Technology Companies (Greece, Europe, USA) – Singular, SAS, Oracle, Siemens, European Dynamics, Accenture Technology, Intrasoft, Intracom, Eurobank Cards, Dialogos,.. About 1/3 are Software System Management personnel – Universities, Municipalities, Regions, Hospitals About 1/3 follow Educational and Research careers – Professors (Carnegie-Mellon-EPFL, Buffalo), Lecturers (Ionian, Thessaly), PostDocs (Stanford), PhD students (Toronto), a small percentage high school

Platforms and Tools TUC/MUSIC developed, maintains, and extends all the Web 2.0 infrastructure of ECE Access to all platforms and demos from: www.music.tuc.gr www.music.tuc.gr University Platforms under development adopt and extend the existing structures

The Courses Platform http://courses.ece.tuc.gr Changes the way of learning: – Students: Collaboration and social skills – Faculty: attending daily needs, progress, interests, dynamic course adaptation – Faculty-student communications, departmental forums More than 100000 hits per month in some courses Students have it in their Bookmark Bar, start the day with it Student in forum: “the only thing that courses does not do is coffee”

The MOLE Platform http://main.moleportal.eu/ Extends the Courses Platform: – Adapts to different organizations and learning styles – Extendible multilingual support (about 10 languages supported) – Video, PowerPoint, synchronization support Used in several EU projects and countries September in ECE replaces courses (developed ETLs, etc.) University adopted it for Open Learning (PI) A student in the forum: “Continue with the development and I see after a while everybody to throw away FaceBook”

Other Platforms Developed by TUC/MUSIC The ECE Web site: www.ece.tuc.grwww.ece.tuc.gr Common Laboratory information system and content management infrastructure for the labs The ECE digital library that is automatically updated from the information systems of the labs http://dlib.ece.tuc.gr/. Will extend to University infrastructurehttp://dlib.ece.tuc.gr/ The Black Sea Cooperation in Education infrastructure (for the Greek ministry of education) http://www.bsec-edu.tuc.gr/http://www.bsec-edu.tuc.gr/ The MODIP Quality Assurance Infrastructure for evaluating the university (under development, ETL from digital libraries, student records, courses)

R&D Programs The laboratory has participated in more than 45 EU competitive R&D programs and excellence networks (>10M): http://www.music.tuc.gr/Funding.showhttp://www.music.tuc.gr/Funding.show – In several TUC/MUSIC was Prime Contractor or Technical Leader Representative projects: Interoperability of Digital Libraries and elearning Applications.
