1 MEANS OF TRANSPORT PAST AND PRESENT

2 The students study different means of transport in our country

3 FAMOUS ROMANIAN INVENTORS The students write down the things they know about the Romanian inventors who contributed to the progress of aeronautics. Traian Vuia Aurel Vlaicu Henry Coandă

4 ·    Traian Vuia ( ) Between he built a bat-shaped aircraft, with flaxen, waterproof wings. In 1906, T.Vuia flew his plane 12 meters, 1 meter high from the ground (using the equipment on board only) which was remarkable at that time. Aurel Vlaicu ( ) He designed and built two aircrafts: Vlaicu I and Vlaicu II and won two prizes at Aspern – Vienna, in June He died in September 1913, trying to fly over the Carpathians. Henry Coandă ( ) In December 1910, H.Coandă flew a jet propelled aircraft, for the first time in the world. He designed and built many planes named “Bristol - Coandă”. In 1934, H.Coandă discovered what is known as “Coandă effect” which has been applied in many technical achievements..

5 I – THE WAY PEOPLE IN THE SCHOOL NEIGHBOURHOOD TRAVEL

6 TRANSPORT SURVEY The students investigate the way people in the school neighbourhood travel: - they count how many cars, pedestrians, etc. pass on the road near the school; - they count how many people are inside the car. This activity is done at different times of the day (740 – 800 a.m.; 200 – 230 p.m.) in order to identify the time of the day which creates the most pollution. The results of the research are gathered and interpreted.

8 SURVEY REPORT The aim of this report is to analyse the results of the survey about the way people in our neighbourhood travel. The survey indicates that most of the people prefer walking (50,67%). Car is a very popular means of transport (45,61%). This shows that people prefer a faster and more comfortable way of travelling. Most of the cars transport 1 person (53,78%), some of them 2 persons (30,68%) and only 41 cars (15,53%) transport 3 or 4 persons. A number of people travel by bicycle (3,51%) and a very small number of people prefer motorbike or cart (0,1%), especially for transporting wood, etc.

9 III – TRANSPORT PAST AND PRESENT
15 students interview their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents about their travel habits. Number of persons interviewed: 30 parents and 52 grandparents and great-grandparents.

13 SURVEY REPORT The aim of this report is to analyse the results of the survey about people’s travel habits: present and past. In this survey parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were asked how they used to travel. The most popular means of transport for grandparents and great-grandparents were train (92%) and bicycle (73%). Most of the great-grandparents used as means of transport carriages or sleighs pulled by horses (100%) and carts pulled by oxen / horses / donkeys (96%). A significant number of grandparents travelled by car (77%) and by bus (81%) and only 3 of them travelled by plane (6%). No great-grandparents travelled by underground. Today, parents travel frequently by car, bus and train (100%) , by tram (93%) or by plane (53%), as they are comfortable and fast. Cart pulled by horses or donkeys is still a mode of transport but only for a minority of them. Cars are the main cause of environmental pollution due to the fact that they give off toxic fumes such as carbon dioxide. In conclusion, this survey indicates that transport in the past was more sustainable than today transport. Today an increasing number of people travel by car which is not environmentally friendly.
