It was a large, public event that received considerable funding and publicity in the Australian media.

In 1987, a royal commission was instituted to examine the issue of aboriginal deaths while in police custody. The commission examined 99 deaths that occurred between 1980 and 1989. This commission found that “The circumstances of their deaths were extremely varied. One cannot point to a common thread of abuse, neglect or racism that is common to these deaths. However, an examination of the lives of the ninety-nine shows that facts associated in every case with their Aboriginality played a significant and in most cases dominant role in their being in custody and dying in custody.” (National Report 1: The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody)
