LANL 4/16/04 #1 Helium-3 Beam Source Development Steve Lamoraux, Los Alamos Collaboration Meeting April 15-16 2004

LANL 4/16/04 #2 3 He Atomic Beam Polarizer Final testing is in progress Expected flux detected Average velocity < 100 m/s Polarization measurements are consistent with the 100% expectation Differential pump stages will be added soon, final tests will be completed

LANL 4/16/04 #4

LANL 4/16/04 #5

LANL 4/16/04 #6 Turbopump Trouble

LANL 4/16/04 #7 Beam Profile Measurements Hot (room temp) beam Use gate valve as a moveable knife edge

LANL 4/16/04 #8 Spin flip region turbopump rga

LANL 4/16/04 #9

LANL 4/16/04 #10 Background reduction The effect of the knife edge before differential pumping (one stage) was about 10-20% of total presure. Now the effect is 5 times background; reduction of background by a factor of 25. Another factor of 5 reduction should be easy 99+% polarization seems an attainable goal

LANL 4/16/04 #11 Density at RGA Aperature area A 10 -10 torr implies  = 4 x 10 6 /cc implies I=9 x 10 10 /sec
