Merit Award – Jim Schwank For significant and sustained contributions to the understanding of radiation effects in semiconductor devices and to the development of radiation-hardened technologies. Early Achievement Award – David Ampleford For contributions to the development of the world’s brightest laboratory x-ray sources, the understanding of z-pinch stagnation dynamics, and the novel application of z pinches to laboratory astrophysics.

Graduate Student Awards Nicole LaHaye (Purdue University) Ph.D. Candidate – Nuclear Engineering (Plasmas, Lasers) Nihaar Mahatme (Vanderbilt University) Ph.D. Candidate – Electrical Engineering (Radiation Effects) Justin Queller (Technion University, Israel) Ph.D. Candidate – Plasma Physics (Plasmas) Yingbin Zhu (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Ph.D. Candidate – Plasmas, Lasers

New Awards for 2014 IEEE Charles K. Birdsall Award IEEE Ronald J. Jaszczak Graduate Award Both awards were approved by BoD in November and now fully funded through the IEEE Foundation Call for nominations will go out in 2014 and the first awards will be given out in 2015. We need to publicize these awards (get them in our brochures and on our website)

IEEE Charles K. Birdsall Award for Contributions to Computational Nuclear and Plasma Sciences For outstanding contributions in computational nuclear and plasma science, with preference given to areas within the broadest scope of plasma physics encompassing the interaction of charged particles and electromagnetic fields $2K annually $30K donation from Ginger Birdsall to the IEEE Foundation $20K matching contribution from NPSS Birdsall Award

IEEE Ronald J. Jaszczak Graduate Award Recognizes an outstanding Graduate Student, Post- doctoral Fellow or Ph.D. level Research Associate in the field of nuclear and medical imaging sciences Up to $5K/year for up to 3 years (one award every 3 years) $50K donation from Ron Jaszczak to the IEEE Foundation $50K matching contribution from NPSS Will be administrated by a new independent Award Committee appointed by the NPSS President. Awardee must be approved by the NPSS Awards Committee and AdCom. Jaszczak Award

Valentine T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant New selection criteria approved Increase funding to $1500 for each awardee, with a maximum of $12000 per year. Remove the requirement that at least one award be given to an applicant from Bulgaria Allow applicants from both NSS and MIC New agreement approved between Jordanov and the IEEE Foundation Need to improve publicizing and advertising List as a grant on the RITC, NMISTC and NPSS websites List in the TABARC Manual (needs TABARC approval)

Child Care Grants The Concept: Provide a modest level of financial support for child care to allow individuals with special situations to attend NPSS conferences. Existing model in APS ( → Stan Schriber) Level of funding ~ $5-10K/yr Requires submitting an application and a procedure for evaluation and selection Could be considered as something similar to a travel grant Are we interested in pursuing this ?
