4 Herbs and Actions - Connie’s frequent prescriptions for patients Astragalus – immune boosting Needs to be simmered (often add to soups or sauces in a muslin bag) Basil – carminative Cayenne – improve appetite, digestion, mucolytic Cinnamon – antimicrobial, anxiolytic, insulin resistance ½ tsp per day on long-cooking oatmeal, sprinkled on apple slices Clove – tooth pain, insulin resistance

5 Kitchen herbs continued Dill – carminative, bad breath Fennel – carminative, bad breath, lactagogue Garlic – antimicrobial, atherosclerosis Raw and crushed for antibiotic effect – I recommend vinaigrette with this Cooked is fine for cardiovascular indications – easiest to do regularly in soup broths which are eaten daily Cooked in curries with turmeric for inflammatory conditions Ginger – anti-inflammatory, antiemetic Decoction works best; lemon-ginger better compliance

6 Kitchen herbs continued Mint – nausea, spasm in the gut Altoids for biliary colic Also helpful for acute esophageal spasm (though worsens reflux) Oregano – antimicrobial, soothe coughs Parsley – diuretic, breath freshener Literally chew a few sprigs for bad breath Rosemary – antioxidant, may help asthma

7 Kitchen herbs continued Sage – antibiotic, helps hot flashes and night sweats, may help diabetes I use a tea when people need to dry up breast milk A couple drops of essential oil in a dish of water in front of a fan for menopausal night sweats Thyme – bronchodilator in steam inhalations, topical rubefacient Turmeric – anti-inflammatory, antidepressant Recommend cooking in curries Black pepper improves absorption of curcumin
