Integration Prototype1 BaBar Integration as a Prototype for SuperB Bill Wisniewski SuperB Workshop at LNF 6 April 2011

Integration Prototype2 Reading the Book A decade ago we read the BaBar detector assembly book straight through. A half dozen years ago we read the sections of the second edition (upgrades: added material installation in the IFR). During the last couple of years we’ve been reading the book backwards…and this time taking very extensive notes, writing procedures, refurbishing very old tooling, creating a lot of new tooling…with detailed photos from web cameras mostly looking in the right direction… Take a quick look at the story (zigzag), with some emphasis on the beamline area… This talk mostly uses pictures taken during the BaBar D&D project. It is useful to look at many assembly photos taken during BaBar construction from the photo archive available at: http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/slacpix/index.htm

Integration Prototype3 Working inward… Solenoid was removed from the flux return iron using refurbished spreader bars, beams, stands, cradles. All tooling was load tested in advance….

Integration Prototype4 Solenoid Removal

Integration Prototype5 Barrel Calorimeter Removal Use many common tooling components to remove the Barrel EMC

Integration Prototype6 DIRC Removal

Integration Prototype7 DCH Removal This shows a concept for installing the SuperB DCH

Integration Prototype8 Aside….backward plug region DCH service penetrations through the plug

Integration Prototype9 SVT BaBar had the luxury (for installation) and curse (added material) of a Support Tube that carried the final beam line elements along with the SVT

Integration Prototype10 SVT Two schemes have been used for the installation/removal of the support tube. They both share the same mechanism on the back side of the detector, and differ at the forward end. –Both schemes are quite hands-on, the first much more than the second. –Second scheme developed after the DCH inner cylinder was damaged when the SVT was removed from BaBar in 2002 for repairs. It was deemed that the initial scheme was very touchy and provided poor control of the support tube as it moved through BaBar

Integration Prototype11 Common Activities in Installation In the forward direction, the raft of magnets that supports one end of the support tube extended almost to the drift chamber forward end. In the backward direction, the raft also extended to the drift chamber backward end, extending through the DIRC tunnel. Remove rafts

Integration Prototype12 Backward Direction Set up a long beam that threads through the drift chamber, mounted on a yoke that allows control of vertical, horizontal positions and the angles the beam makes with respect to the axis of the detector. This is a very hands-on process.

Integration Prototype13 Forward Direction: Initial scheme Support Support Tube via the crane as it is pushed out of the detector. This does not provide firm alignment for the support tube at both ends. The yellow beam pulls/pushes the Support Tube through the detector without overconstraint. (Additional peculiarity: crane location is not completely adjustable. There are dings in the crane rail (several decades old); the crane has fixed step size transverse and longitudinal (and vertical).)

Integration Prototype14 Forward Direction: Improved Scheme Use a rail scheme to remove uncertain control provided by the crane scheme. The crane scheme took more than a shift of nail-biting tension to remove the SVT. The rail scheme allowed removal with substantially less angst, and in less than a shift.

Integration Prototype15 Lessons Learned The rail scheme provided significant advantage over the crane scheme for the single battle of Support Tube removal. However, this was a minor part of the full multi-week campaign to remove/install the Support Tube. –Big time driver was the disconnect/reconnect of the beam line components. Many connections were in very awkward to work in spots. The rafts needed to be removed. Other upstream/ downstream components needed to be moved to allow removal of the rafts. –BaBar subsystem cables were required to be disconnected. More careful integration planning would have helped with this in the first round; fixed for the second round with extra connectors added. A substantial part of the added time was due to accomodating cables that needed to run through the rafts in the backward direction. –Remediation: design beam line components to leave clear space around the detector (hard); come up with a scheme that allows quicker cable disconnect. –One schedule driver was removal of the Support Tube to a distant clean room for disassembly to give access to the SVT.
