1 Kettering General Hospital Newborn Hearing Screening Programme The Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) aims to identify moderate, severe and profound hearing impairment in newborn babies.  One or two babies in every 1000 are born with a hearing loss in one or both ears.  At Kettering approximately 4000 babies per year are screened in hospital and in the community.  The Newborn Hearing Screening Programme has been running now for eight years (started in 2005).  Since 2005 over 30,000 babies have been screened and approximately 70 of those have been diagnosed with a hearing loss. 1

2 Four of our members have worked at Kettering for at least six years and two new screeners joined the team in February of this year. All members are fully trained in all aspects of the Hearing Screening Programme. The screening team members are Julia Cowell, Nicola Fairey, Lynne Grey, Mandy Thompson, Jayne Watters and Martha Weyman. The Co-ordinator for the team is Hayley Adams. 3  The screen is carried out when your baby is asleep or very settled at the bedside in hospital wherever possible. You will be given a hearing leaflet shortly after the birth of your baby. The screener may screen the baby at that time or return when your baby is asleep.  Babies who are only a few hours old can still have fluid present in the ears and this fluid can block their ears. The screener may therefore return if you are staying in hospital for longer when the baby is a few hours older.  Sometimes the screen needs to be repeated and this is carried out in hospital just before you go home or you will be offered an outpatient clinic appointment to complete the screen in a few weeks time. 5 What does it mean if my baby’s final screen shows a No Clear Response?  If the final screen shows a No Clear Response this does not mean that your baby has a hearing loss.  Your baby will be given an audiology appointment to attend at the Audiology Department here at Kettering General. This appointment will be for a hearing test to check baby’s hearing.  At this appointment, baby needs to be tested when they are fast asleep. The appointment is one hour and 15 minutes long to allow plenty of time to settle your baby.  You will be advised after the hearing test of the outcome by the audiologist at this appointment. Help and advice will given by staff at this time. 5
