Interpreting Motion Graphically A few basics to remember…  The slope of a position-time graph provides velocity information…  Steeper = faster motion (position chaging at a faster rate)  + slope = motion in the positive direction (positive value of velocity)  - slope = motion in the negative direction (negative value of velocity)

Interpreting Motion Graphically The slope of a velocity-time graph provides acceleration information…  Steeper = greater acceleration (velocity changing at a faster rate)  + slope = acceleration in the positive direction (positive value of acceleration) ***Note: this does not necessarily mean moving in the positive direction  - slope = acceleration in the negative direction (negative value of acceleration) ***Note: this does not necessarily mean moving in the negative direction

Not Moving: Position Velocity Acceleration time

(+) direction, constant v Position Velocity Acceleration time

(-) direction, constant v: Position Velocity Acceleration time

(+) direction, increasing speed: Position Velocity Acceleration time

(+) direction, slowing down: Position Velocity Acceleration time

(-) direction, increasing speed: Position Velocity Acceleration time

(-) direction, slowing down: Position Velocity Acceleration time

ALL OTHER GRAPHS ARE COMBINATIONS OF THE SEGMENTS PRESENTED ON THE PREVIOUS SLIDES…
