4  17.3 Temperature Controls Why Temperatures Vary  Factors other than latitude that exert a strong influence on temperature include:  heating of land and water, altitude, geographic position, cloud cover, and ocean currents.  Temperature controls are - any factor that causes temperature to vary from place to place and from time to time.

7  17.3 Temperature Controls Why Temperatures Vary  Geographic Position The geographic setting can greatly influence temperatures experienced at a specific location. A coastal location where prevailing winds blow from the ocean onto the shore (windward coast) experiences considerably different temperatures than does a coastal location where the prevailing winds blow from the land toward the ocean (leeward coast).

8   Geographic Position Mountains are another aspect of geographic position, as they act as barriers to temperature variations.

9  Mean Monthly Temperatures for Eureka and New York City Eureka is strongly influenced by prevailing ocean winds, and New York City is not.

10  Mean Monthly Temperatures for Seattle and Spokane The Cascade Mountains cut off Spokane from the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean. How does this affect Spokane’s annual temperature range?

11  17.3 Temperature Controls Why Temperatures Vary Altitude The altitude can greatly influence temperatures experienced at a specific location.

12  Mean Monthly Temperatures for Guayaquil and Quito Quito’s altitude is much higher than Guayaquil’s, causing Quito to experience cooler temperatures than Guayaquil.

13  17.3 Temperature Controls Why Temperatures Vary  Cloud Cover and Albedo Albedo is the fraction of total radiation that is reflected by any surface. Many clouds have a high albedo and therefore reflect back to space a significant portion of the sunlight that strikes them.

14   Why Temperatures Vary The extent of cloud cover is a factor that influences temperature in the lower atmosphere.

15  Clouds Reflect and Absorb Radiation During daylight hours, clouds reflect solar radiation back to space. At night, clouds absorb radiation from the land and reradiate some of it back to Earth, increasing nighttime temperatures. What is happening to the solar radiation in Figure A? How do the clouds during the day affect the temperature? What is happening in Figure B? How do the clouds affect the temperature? Why do clouds during the day and night affect temperature differently?

16  17.3 Temperature Controls World Distribution of Temperature  Isotherms are lines on a weather map that connect points where the temperature is the same. Isotherms generally trend east and west and show a decrease in temperatures from the tropics toward the poles.
