SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Chapter 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Etu9BWb uDlY

Warm Up List all the ways igneous rocks are formed How are Metamorphic rocks formed? What are the different types of metamorphic rocks? (name and describe)

Warm Up What are the different layers of the atmosphere? How does temperature fluctuate between each layer? What can be found in each layer?

Sediments Much of Earth’s surface is covered with sediments Sediments are pieces of solid material that have been deposited on Earth’s surface by wind, water, ice, gravity, or chemical precipitation When sediments become cemented together, they form sedimentary rocks.

Formation of a Sedimentary Rock 1. Weathering 2. Erosion and Transport 3. Deposition 4. Burial 5. Lithification / Cementation

Weathering Weathering - physical and chemical processes that break rock into smaller pieces called clastics. Clastic sediments range in size from huge boulders to microscopic particles.

Weathering Types of Weathering -Chemical weathering- process in which minerals in a rock are chemically changed by natural processes - physical weathering- process in which minerals are broken down into smaller particles

Erosion and Transport After rock fragments have been weathered, they are transported to new locations. Erosion- the removal and movement of surface materials from one location to another. Types of erosion- wind, moving water, gravity, and glaciers, ice

Deposition Deposition is when sediments are laid down on the ground or sink to the bottoms of bodies of water Sediments are deposited when transport stops Sediments form layers of sorted soil with the largest grains at the bottom and the smallest particles at the top.

Burial and Lithification Burial is when more and more sediments are deposited covering the sediments on the bottom lithification- the process that changes sediments into sedimentary rocks Lithification begins as the weight of overlying sediments forces the sediment grains closer together, causing the physical changes.

Cementation Cementation occurs when mineral growth hardens sediments together into solid rock.

Types of Sedimentary Rocks Classification of Sedimentary rocks are based on what they form from There are three main groups of sedimentary rocks -clastic -organic -chemical

Types of Sedimentary Rocks

Clastic the most common type formed from the abundant deposits of loose sediments found on Earth’s surface classified by size

Organic Sedimentary Rocks Organic sedimentary rocks are formed from the remains of once-living things The most abundant organic sedimentary rock is limestone

Organic Sedimentary Rocks Another type of organic sedimentary rock, coal, forms from the remains of plant material Over long periods of time, thick layers of vegetation slowly accumulate in swamps and coastal areas and are buried and compressed. Coal is made from Carbon.

Chemical Sedimentary Rocks During chemical weathering, minerals can be dissolved and carried into lakes and oceans As water evaporates from the lakes and oceans, the dissolved minerals are left behind In arid (dry, desert) regions, high evaporation rates can increase the amount of dissolved minerals in bodies of water
