3 Hoovers Description “Cummins is in it for the long haul. The company (formerly Cummins Engine Company) is the world's leader in the manufacture of large diesel engines. The company's engines also power school buses, medium-duty trucks, pickup trucks (primarily the Dodge Ram), and equipment for mining and construction. Cummins claims about one-third of the North American market for heavy-duty truck engines. The company also makes power generation products such as its Onan generator sets and Newage alternators. Cummins’ Fleetguard and Nelson filtration subsidiaries produce fuel filters and air filters for heavy-duty engines.Fleetguard 2005 was a banner year for Cummins. In fact it was the best year in the company's history. Cummins has gradually been transforming itself from a company focused on North America to one whose strategy is global and aimed at seizing opportunities in emerging markets -- chiefly in China and India. The new strategy aims to eliminate or lessen the cyclical booms and busts that traditionally have been the bane of the heavy-duty truck industry. The company's strides in emerging markets have been made through the nearly 50 joint ventures Cummins has formed with overseas partners. As part of its global strategy Cummins has also opened new purchasing offices in China, India, the Czech Republic, and Brazil. Through these offices Cummins is building purchasing relationships with local manufacturers to secure high-quality, low-cost sourcing. Cummins has also opened up its newest technical center in India. To reap future rewards from its global focus, Cummins has also been tightening up its global distribution network so emerging markets can take full advantage of the Cummins brand of parts sales and service. Cummins plans to stay on top by continuing to invest in high growth areas, specifically in China and India -- Cummins' second- and third-largest customers are located in China and India, respectively.” © 2007 Sprint Nextel.
