1
Male Reproductive System
2
DO NOW Write down as many parts of the male reproductive system as you can on the worksheet provided.
5
Male Reproductive System
7
Functions of the Male Reproductive System Produce and store sperm Transport sperm into the female body Produce testosterone
8
Structures of Male Reproductive System External: Penis Foreskin Scrotum Testicles Internal: Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicles Urethra Prostate Gland Cowper’s Gland Copy structures in notebook, and write function as we continue.
9
Penis 2 parts: shaft and glans Deposits sperm into the female body Becomes erect when blood flow to the penis increases
10
Foreskin Thin protective layer of skin Covers head of penis Removal is called CIRCUMCISION. –Religious reasons –Concerns about hygiene –Cultural or social reasons
11
Scrotum Loose pouch of skin that hangs behind the penis Holds and protects testicles Changes size to regulate temperature of the testicles. Skin of scrotum keeps the testes slightly below body temperature so the sperm can stay alive
12
Testicles 2 egg shaped organs that hang inside the scrotum Produce SPERM- male sex cell Produce TESTOSTERONE- male sex hormone responsible for changes during puberty
13
Epididiymis Tightly coiled mass of tubes located on the top of each testicle Allows sperm to fully mature
14
Vas Deferens 2 tubes in which sperm are stored after maturing in the epididymis. Extend from the epididymis to the urethra
15
Seminal Vesicles Provides fluid to nourish (feed) sperm Provides nutrients and energy to sperm
16
Urethra Tube that connects to the vas deferens Runs through the center of the penis Carries sperm and urine out of the body
17
Prostate Gland Spongy gland at the top of the urethra Release nourishing fluid for sperm travel during ejaculation
18
Cowpers Gland 2 round glands along the urethra Releases fluid to clean and lubricate the urethra Protects sperm from acid
19
Other Terms Associated with the Male Reproductive System
20
Semen The combined fluids from the seminal vesicle, prostate gland, and Cowper’s gland added to sperm
21
Erection Condition of the penis in which it becomes firm and enlarged due to a sudden rush of blood flow
22
Ejaculation Release of semen out of the penis At the height of sexual arousal, a series of muscular contractions initiates this
23
On the worksheet provided, fill in the life travel of a sperm from creation to ejaculation
24
Life Travel of Sperm 1. Produced in testes 2. Stored in Epididymis 3. Released into the Vas Deferens 4.Passes seminal vesicle 5. Passes prostate gland 6. Now Urethra – passes Cowper’s gland 7. travels down the penis and out of the body
25
Problems of the male reproductive system
26
Reproduction problems Inguinal Hernia- Separation of tissues allows intestine to push into abdomen near top of scrotum Symptoms : lump in groin near thigh, pain in groin; severe case partial or complete intestinal blockage Sterility- Inability to reproduce; results from too few sperm; less than 20 million per milliliter of seminal fluid
27
Enlarged Prostate Gland –Prostate gets bigger –Obstructs urinary track Prostate Cancer –Affects older men usually over the age of 35 –Physical exams by a doctor can help with early detection Testicular Cancer –Affects men usually 14-40 –Self examinations and physicals by a doctor can help with early detection
28
STD’s effecting male reproduction Chlamydia/gonorrhea –Bacterial infections cause burning during urination. –Causes discharge from penis Syphilis –Bacterial infection; initially painless, then red sores appear –Can damage internal organs if not treated Genital Herpes –Virus; blister like sores in genital area –Remains in the body for life
29
Care of Male Reproductive System Get regular check-ups –Go to doctor every 12 – 18 months Bathe regularly Wear protective equipment –use protective cup or supporter during physical activities Perform regular self-examinations –Check for any changes Practice safe sexual activity or abstinence –Use protection or abstain from intercourse
