Overview Estate Owned by: The Tasca d'Almerita family Wine Region: Sicilia Winemaker: Laura Orsi Estate Founded: 1830 Winery Production: 3,300,000 Bottles Count Lucio Tasca-current owner

Location Tasca d'Almerita has estates throughout the islands of Sicily. The heart of the Tasca estate is situated in the Sclafani countryside, between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta. Surrounded by profuse and varied flora and fauna, including palms, almond trees, and acacia. A microclimate ideal for wine cultivation thanks to an altitude that varies between 1,300 to 2,500 ft and a temperature range that averages about (59°F at night.

History For two hundred years the Tasca d'Almerita family has tended this land lovingly and expertly, constantly seeking ways to render our task more pleasurable. For eight generations the family is linked to two extraordinary places which are part and parcel of Sicily's history: – The Regaleali estate which now stretches over 1,500 acres at the very center of Sicily – Villa Tasca (formerly Villa Camastra) in Palermo, goes back to the middle of the 15th century. It was first a hunting lodge, and because of this was transformed to a holiday home.

History Tasca counts have always spearheaded a can-do culture, being the first to introduce any innovations in farming technology and cultivation techniques. The heart of the family’s wine production is the Regaleali estate: the result of the joining in 1837 of the influential Tasca family and the historic farm, Regali Ali, located in the island’s mountainous center. While the history of Tasca d’Almerita dates back to the 19th century, it was Count Giuseppe Tasca who started a new era for the winery and the Sicilian wine business in the late 1950s. He devoted himself to the promotion of Sicilian wines and introduced a new business model based on quality and innovation rather than quantity and bulk production. He invented the winery’s two flagship wines: Rosso del Conte and Nozze d’Oro.

History From the late 19th century through the early years of the 20th, Regaleali upgraded and specialized, succeeding in making itself stand out from the under-developed region around to become a model agricultural business. From the mid-20th century onwards, the family firm grew and developed, inventing, producing and distributing the wealth of this land and spreading its values: solidity, consistency and simple hard work. Today the winery is run by the Tasca d’Almerita family with Count Lucio (Count Giuseppe’s son) as President and his two sons, Giuseppe who serves as Vice President and Alberto as Managing Director.

History In addition to the wines, the estate is practically self sufficient, producing most of the vegetables, fruits, wheat, olives, cheeses and meats they need. The property also now supports a renowned cooking school founded by Anna Tasca Lanza. The winery is one of the few adopters of the SOStain system of sustainable agriculture. Tasca d'Almerita now has almost 1,500 acres planted with vines, and exports its produce to four continents.

History The firm runs five producing estates. Regaleali Estate – The true hub, extends across for 1,250 acres amidst a dramatic hilly landscape at the edge of the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta. The Whitaker Estate – Joint venture in the province of Trapani between the Whitaker family and Tasca d’Almerita family. The Capofaro Estate – In 2002, the family purchased vineyards on the small island of Salina to create Tenuta Capofaro, which produces elegant sweet wines with high acidity yet fresh balance throughout. The Tascante Estate – The Sciarananova and Boccadorzo estates on the Etna volcano (in the province of Catania) where vineyards are surrounded by centuries-old chestnuts woods and where the earth shows its full energy. The Sallier de La Tour Estate – Tasca partnered with Sallier de la Tour in the Jato valley to create a model company and a brand.

Philosophy “No fruit without roots”…the Regaleali estate is emblematic of the history of Sicily: a rich tapestry woven of many cultures and flavors. The Tasca family have worked for generations to maintain the singular and precious character of Sicilian wines.

The Regaleali Estate For generations, the Tenuta Regaleali estate has been at the heart of the Tasca d'Almerita family's wine production. Stretches over several hundred acres through the Sicilian interior between Palermo and Caltanissetta, to the Sclafani Bagni hills where the heat so typical of this Mediterranean region is less intense. On land rising to 3,00 ft above sea level, the large diurnal range means fruit matures more slowly, and a greater range of grapes can be grown. A triumphant example of diversification, environmental protection and biodiversity.

Owner Alberto Tasca - Managing Director Born in Palermo, Sicily and graduated from the Swiss College Institut Montanan in 1989. Worked for the family real estate company, while at the same time pursued his lifelong passion for car racing. In 1992, he received an award for Best Newcomer in racing, while winning second place in the Formula Europa Italian Championship with an Alfa Romeo Boxer. In 1993, Alberto decided to dedicate himself full-time to Tasca d’Almerita. Started work in the vineyards, and in the following years, his responsibilities at the winery grew to include purchasing and account management. One of his main accomplishments was a comprehensive re-design of the company’s data processing systems. In 2001, Alberto was names Commercial Director and Chief Executive Officer at Tasca d’Almerita holding. That same year he managed the acquisition of Capo Faro, a top-class estate & resort in Salina. Alberto is married to Francesca Borghese and they have two beautiful children: Alessandro Leone and Niccolo’.

Owner Giuseppe Tasca - Vice President Giuseppe was born in Palermo, Sicily. Decided to concentrate his studies on agriculture at the Catholic University of Piacenza, specializing in viticulture. Under the guidance of Professor Mario Fregoni, he researched natural antioxidants of wine. Returned to the family winery, where he focused on every aspect of wine production. He was named Director, thus given the responsibility for reaching a new level of quality in the vineyards and the cellar. Began exploring eco-sustainable methods of agriculture. Research led him to plant experimental vines on the property, and to improve the techniques used for the traditional varieties already planted. Today, he is Vice-President of Tasca d’Almerita In 1992, Giuseppe married Luisa Mainardi and they have two children: Lucio and Martina.

Winemaker Carlo Ferrini – Winemaker Born in Florence, he graduated from the Faculty of Agrarian Science at the University of Florence in 1978 Began an association with the Chianti Classico Consortium, taking charge of the organization's Technical Office in 1986. Served as Technical Director of the Chianti Classico 2000 experimental research project, an assignment which allowed him to develop special competence in the selection of Sangiovese clones. Today, Carlo is widely recognized as one of the leading experts on Sangiovese. In 1991, he was admitted to the Academy of the Vine and Wine and the following year to the Academy of Oenology. In 1992, he began his career as a free-lance consultant. Has collaboration with Tasca d’Almerita and Valle Reale. Received many awards and accolades for his wines in the authoritative Gambero Rosso Guide to Italian Wine. Named Winemaker of the Year in 2000.
