3 What is consumer sovereignty? Consumer sovereignty is the concept that consumers rule. In order to succeed, businesses must produce goods and services that consumers are willing and able to buy.

4 How do consumers tell businesses what they want? Consumers tell businesses what they want through their dollar votes— that is, what they buy.

7 What are entrepreneurs, and what is their role in a market economy? What are important incentives for entrepreneurs? How do entrepreneurs benefit society? Entrepreneurs are people who take calculated risks in order to start new businesses and develop innovative products and processes. Entrepreneurs accept the risk of organizing resources to produce goods and services, and they expect to earn profits.

8 Entrepreneurs earn profits when buyers purchase the products they sell at prices higher than the costs of production. Entrepreneurs incur losses when buyers do not purchase the products they sell at prices high enough to cover the costs of production. Profit is an important incentive that leads entrepreneurs to accept the risks of business failure. Independence in decision-making is another incentive important to entrepreneurs.

9 Entrepreneurs increase competition by bringing new goods and services to market or delivering products in innovative ways. They often foster technological progress and economic growth.

11 TYPES OF BUSINESSES Five Types of Businesses (companies or producers) Sole (single) Proprietorship (owner) Partnership Corporation Cooperative Franchise

12 TYPES OF BUSINESSES SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP - A business owned by a single person

13 Sole Proprietorship Benefits: The owner makes all decisions and keeps all profits. Costs: The owner generally has limited financial resources. The owner also faces unlimited liability, which means if the company fails, the owner can lose personal assets along with business assets.

14 SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP Advantages –Easy to Start! –YOU get ALL of the profits! –YOU make ALL of the decisions! –YOU are your own BOSS! –NO corporate income tax! Disadvantages –UNLIMITED LIABILITY – YOU are responsible for ALL problems and debts  –It’s hard to raise much Money  –YOU have to pay for ALL your health insurance, etc. 

15 TYPES OF BUSINESSES PARTNERSHIP – A business owned by two or more people.

16 Partnership Benefits: Owners make decisions and keep the profits. They share responsibilities, and each has a unique set of skills and expertise. Costs: Owners face unlimited liability, limited financial resources, and potential conflict with partners.

17 PARTNERSHIP Advantages –Easier to raise Money! –Each owner has special talents! –NO corporate income tax! Disadvantages –UNLIMITED LIABILITY – YOU are responsible for ALL problems and debts  –Official Agreement – Articles of Partnership is complex 

18 TYPES OF BUSINESSES CORPORATION – A business that has an official charter that sets up the organization and rules of the company. Owned by MANY people (stockholders).

19 Corporation Benefits: Corporations are able to accumulate sufficient financial capital to make large-scale investments and achieve economies of scale (i.e., bringing down cost of production by producing in volume). They also have limited liability, meaning shareholder risk is limited to their share of ownership in the corporation. The corporation transcends the lives of those persons who created it.

20 Corporation Costs: Corporations face tax implications (e.g., double taxation—profits are taxed at the corporate level and again when distributed to shareholders as dividends). Corporations are more expensive to establish and are governed by more regulations.

21 CORPORATIONS Advantages –Easier to raise Money through sale of shares (%) of STOCK! –Professional Managers (experts) run the business! –LIMITED LIABILITY – stock holders are NOT responsible for problems and debts! –Given many protections and rights by the US government! Disadvantages –Complicated organization, rules, and Charter  –MUST pay corporate income tax (double taxation)  –Subject to LOTS of government rules and REGULATIONS 

22 TYPES OF BUSINESSES COOPERATIVE – A “Not-For-Profit” voluntary group that forms to benefit its members.

23 Cooperatives Benefits: Cooperatives are member-owned and operate for members’ benefit (e.g., credit unions, agricultural cooperatives). Members enjoy discounted products and/or services, may receive refunds at the end of the year, face no personal liability, have a vote in how the business is run, and have interests similar to other members. Costs: Decisions made by the group may not suit all members, and the decision-making process may be more complex and slower than in other organizations.

24 COOPERATIVE Advantages –Members benefit from lower prices! (You can buy in bulk – large quantities) - Members can pool (join) their resources! –YOU can trade work for food or other benefits! Disadvantages –NO PROFIT  –Members might not get along  –NO PROFIT 

25 Franchise Benefits: Training and marketing is provided by the franchisor. The franchisee gains the exclusive right to sell in an area and benefits from product development. Costs: The franchisee pays high franchise fees, enjoys a limited product line, and operates under strict guidelines and standards.
