BIBLE Engagement Study Report released May 1, 2014, based on study of 4,474 Canadians This report is a first in a series based on the Canadian Bible Engagement Study data. Other reports will cover topics such as translations of the Bible Canadians read, formats of the Bible Canadians use and Bible literacy. 5 BIBLE Engagement Study: CONFIDENCE CONVERSATION COMMUNITY

BIBLE Engagement Study: CONFIDENCE

14% About 1 in 7 Canadian Christians read the Bible at least once a week. The majority of Canadians, including those who identify themselves as Christians, read the Bible either seldom or never.

Fallen by 1/2 Weekly Bible reading in Canada has fallen by half since 1996. Surprisingly, the frequency of Bible reading is much the same for older and younger Bible readers. Older used to be known to be the more frequent readers.

Only 18% of Canadians strongly agree the Bible is the Word of God. Down from 35% in 1996.

study findings Canadians who strongly agree that the Bible is the Word of God are 10x’s more likely to read the Bible frequently (at least a few times a week) and 6x’s as likely to attend religious services weekly as those who just moderately agree.

69% of Canadians and half of Christians agree that the Bible has irreconcilable contradictions. 2% who believe the Bible has irreconcilable contradictions read it frequently. 8% would attend religious services weekly.

1 in 7 Canadians (13%) and about 1 in 4 Christians (23%) strongly agree that the Bible is relevant to modern life.

study findings Canadians who strongly agree the Bible is relevant are more than 10x’s as likely to read the Bible frequently 4x’s as likely to attend services weekly...

study findings 5x’s as likely to reflect frequently on its meaning for their lives almost 10x’s as likely to talk to others about it at least weekly as those who just moderately agree.

Almost 2/3’s of Canadians (64%) and 6 in 10 Christians agree that the scriptures of all major world religions teach essentially the same things. Those who do are likely to disregard the teachings of these texts and find a common ethic of social peace behind the texts.

BIBLE Engagement Study: CONVERSATION

2 in 10 Only about 1 in 10 Canadians (11%) and 2 in 10 Christians (21%) reflect on the meaning of the Bible for their lives at least a few times a week.

study findings Canadians who reflect at least a few times a week are 4x’s as likely to read the Bible frequently 2x’s as likely to attend services weekly as those who reflect just once a week or once or twice a month.

Only 11% Only 6% of Canadians and 11% of Christians talk to others about the Bible outside of religious services at least once a week.

study findings Those who do have conversations about the Bible at least once a week have more robust Bible engagement and religious commitment profiles than any other factor.  63% attend services weekly  57% read the Bible weekly  81% reflect weekly

BIBLE Engagement Study: COMMUNITY

study findings More frequent church attendance is associated with confidence in the Bible. Those with moderate confidence are less likely to attend.

study findings During a time when church attendance was in decline, confidence in the Bible as the Word of God has remained constant for each level of attendance. This suggests that something happens at church services to instill and nurture confidence in the Bible.

43% Bible reading is more prevalent in some religious traditions. Evangelicals are 7% of the study but account for almost half (43%) of frequent Bible readers.  Mainline Protestants - 13%  English Catholics - 11%  French Catholics - 4%

study findings Conversations about the Bible drive other kinds of Bible engagement. To talk about the Bible you have to READ the Bible, REFLECT on the Bible, and BE PRESENT WITH OTHERS to talk about the Bible.

CONCLUSIONS… CONCLUSIONS…  Conversations about the Bible need to be participatory, not passive.  Conversations drive other kinds of Bible engagement.  To talk about it, you have to read it, reflect and be present with others. CONFIDENCE CONVERSATION COMMUNITY

Confidence + Conversation + Community
