(You do not need to write in complete sentences, just jot some things down so you remember your thoughts. 3.) Complete activity 98. You do not need to write in complete sentences, but you do need to answer all the questions. (Use the same process as above)

6 WARM-UP FRIDAY 1/29/16 Pick up your notebook and any old work from station C. Then, in your notebook, answer the following question on page 13. Which scenario best describes the statement “survival of the fittest?” a.The organism with muscular arms survives in the desert and reproduces b.Peppered moths that camouflage with their environment have a better chance to survive and reproduce. c.Turtles are slow so that prey cannot catch up with them and eat them. d.Body builders are much more likely to survive this quiz because they work out their muscles instead of their brain.

8 EVOLUTION NOTES

9 1.) BIOLOGIC EVOLUTION Each Species has a particular role within an ecosystem. (This is also called a niche) Most species are specifically adapted to the environment they live in and the role that they play. This adaptation happens because of genetic variation.

10 GENETIC VARIATION Genetic Variation is the small differences in the animals of the same species. These differences are “inheritable” which means they can be passed on to different generations because they are written on the species DNA. You cannot have evolution without having genetic variation. This is what creates the “differences” that allow for organisms to be better or worse than the other.

11 GENETIC VARIATION AND MUTATIONS Genetic Variation exists because of mutations. A mutation is a change in the DNA sequence that results in a different feature than what was originally written.

12 DNA AND MUTATIONS DNA is the source of all of your genetic traits. DNA is made up of 4 bases: –Adenine –Thymine –Quanine –Cytosine

13 DNA AND MUTATIONS The combinations of these base pairs makes up your traits.

14 MUTATIONS AND GENETIC VARIATION Through mutations we get genetic variation.

15 MUTATIONS: GOOD AND BAD Mutations can be good, or they can be bad; or they can have no effect at all.

16 HELPFUL MUTATIONS ARE GOOD Helpful mutations will be passed on to the next generation

17 NATURAL SELECTION Natural selection is the process of passing on good mutations. If a mutation is a better trait than the others, the organism will be more “fit” (adapted to its environment). Therefore, the organism will be able to reproduce (more, longer, better) and affect every set of offspring it has with this better trait. Slowly, through many generations, the entire population will change because this trait is better.

18 DARWIN’S THEORY Darwin's theory consisted of two main points: 1) diverse groups of animals evolve from one or a few common ancestors; 2) the mechanism by which this evolution takes place is natural selection This process can lead to SPECIATION (The process of creating new species)
