God’s faithfulness, holiness and salvation in Joshua Joshua is “Yahweh is Salvation” in Hebrew And, you’ve guessed it, JESUS in Greek

Plan Summary of the key structure of the 24 chapters Give some background Deep-dive into some of the sections that have become “living word” to me over last month

Chapter summary 24 chapters Chapter 1 v 1-9 Joshua’s commission, Promise and command Chapters 1v10 to Ch 5, entry into the land Chapters 5-12 conquest of the land Chapters 13-22 dividing up the land, the cities of refuge Chapter 23-24, two speeches/sermons and covenant renewal by the people. Joshua’s death and burial of Joseph’s bones.

Background Joshua summarises it in ch 24. From Terah Abraham to Isaac, Jacob, Joseph to Egypt. Set my people free!. The passover, the blood of the lamb on the door posts, or the first born dies. Moses, parting of Red Sea. Manna, and water from the rock, indestructible shoes and clothes, disobedience a contra-indication for entering the promised land, including Moses End of Deuteronomy we see Moses laying hands on Joshua.

Dive, dive, dive! Living Word1 “the same Spirit” The same spirit (Deut 34v9) Filled with the Spirit of wisdom, as I was with Moses, (Joshua ch1 v5 and The LORD will be with you v9. Romans Ch 8v11 “if the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you....” No limit to how much of God’s spirit you can have. The same spirit raised Christ.

Living Word 2 “The Commander and the weapon” Joshua ch 5v13-18 Man with a sword And the weapon. Praise. LORD, we are on your side, we will follow you into battle.

Living Word 3 Obedience matters Achan kept some stuff from Jericho. The Israelites lost in battle. Sin matters. Let’s unearth it from under our tents/the hidden parts of our inner beings, and live holy obedient lives. Obedience and praise=Victory Sin and disobedience = Failure and defeat

Living word number 4 Our inheritance as priests The Levites didn’t get any land of their own to inherit, ch13v14 their inheritance is the offerings made by fire, and v32 The Lord the God of Israel is their inheritance. Reminds me of the tongues of fire that came on the disciples after Jesus’ death and resurrection, and God Himself is our inheritance, joint heirs with Christ.

Living Word number 5 “Springs of Water” Ch 15 Caleb gives his daughter Acsah in marriage to Othniel, a hero in battle. The land they inherited was in a desert area, the Negev desert, down in the south. Asks for a field, but also.. Joshua asks her, “ What can I do for you?” she replies, give me a special favour, “Lord give me also springs of water” Dry place? Lord, give us also springs of water.

The Living word number 6 “the ultimate saviour” Inferred by afflictions to the Egyptians the passover, blood on the door posts, saved from the angel of death of firstborn Rahab and the blood red cord, the invading Israelites are to leave everyone in her house unharmed. Ch 2 Red rope hanging from the window. The cities of refuge, ch 20; accused of manslaughter ; criteria...how do you qualify to entry into the refuge, the place of safety.

The great salvation story Who is it for? You and me and.....
