PROBLEMS OF MIGRATION IN ROMANIA

Durring the comunist area the majority of the Jewish, Germans, Italians, Greeks, Polish had left Romania. Despite the fact that now Romania is a E.U. member, a limited number of migrants come in Romania because of economical situation. The main issue in Romania is in present related with gypsy (Rroma) community. Originally, they arrived in Romania and other Balkan countries during the Medieval ages sold as slaves by Turks, which bought them from the Arabs. They were enslaved by Arabs during the conquering of the Indian sub-continent. They were very well-educated persons and very good handymen (iron, gold, wood, musicians). Poverty and social exclusion in Romania

During the history, Romania continously faced this phenomenons: emigration and imigration. The ancestors of the Romanian people are Dacians (northern branch of the Thracian nation wich inhabit the Balkan Peninsula, excepting the greek area). Between 102-107, the Roman Empire conquered the whole Dacia, which will be entirely Romanised as the Balkan Peninsula. Saint Apostle Andrew christianised the new formed Romanian nation, which later became Orthodoxian. During the medieval ages several waves of other ethnical groups reach Romanian territory: slavs, germanics, hunes, hungarians, turks, tatars, jewish, armenians, gypsies, etc. Many Romanian territories were, for a long or a short period of time, under different authorities: Byzantin, Hungarian, Austrian, Polish, Russian, etc. So, Romanian society faces different cultural influence which enriched the local Daco-Roman culture. In 1938, Romania had 20 million people, 75% ethnic Romanian, and a quarter of different other background: Hungarian, German, Jewish, Serbs, Russian, Ukrainians, Bulgarian, Italian, Polish, Gypsies, Armenian, Greek, etc.

In 1990 the Romanian population was 23 million inhabitants and presently the number is 21,4 million. One of the reasons why, besides the low natality rate, is the migration towards the E.U. countries but also other countries from the world. A particularity of Romanian citizens migration is the departure of various specialists (medics, engineers, IT specialists) in more developed countries were they receive better salaries leaving a lot of important sectors without the necessary human resources. Presently 2,5 million Romanian are leaving in other countries especially in the E.U (Italy between 0,6-0,8 million, Spain 0,5-0,6 million). Concerning the migration towards Romania the number of immigrants is mainly low, our country being primarily a transit route to other E.U. country. A large number of immigrants are the citizens of the Republic of Moldova due important to the historical ties with this countries (The Republic of Moldova was part of Romania until the second world war). Also student migration can be identified in Romania especially from countries such us Iran, Irak, Jordan etc. because of low university fees. Some of them became Romanian citizens
