1 Personal Hygiene

2 What is hygiene? Conditions or practices to maintain health and preventing disease, especially through cleanliness. EX: GROOMING: - taking care of your body and appearance Keeping teeth, skin, hair or nails clean and healthy!

3 The Truth about Pimples….
Acne affects about 80% of adolescents. Not caused by uncleanliness Increased hormone levels stimulate oil glands in skin. Oil glands – block pores that result in blackheads and pimples. If picked at can leave permanent scarring.

4 Types of Pimples Whiteheads, blackheads and acne…OH MY!!!!
1. Whiteheads: hair follicle (root) is plugged with oil and skin cells. 2. Blackheads: plugged up stuff comes up to the surface of the skin and the air touches is. 3. Cystine Acne: Plugged follicle breaks deep inside the skin, nodules or cysts form.

5 What can make acne worse????
Oil-based makeup, suntan oil, hair gels and hair sprays. Stress Period (females) Picking at your pimples. Scrubbing skin too hard Getting too much sun

6 The Good News…….. Almost all cases of acne can be treated successfully!!! YAYYYYYY!!!!! Treatment: Gently wash involved areas with non-oiled soap and face cloth, twice a day. Avoid Moisturizers Over the counter medications with benzoyl peroxide can be used in mild cases. Dermatologist (Severe Cases).

7 Pimples: Myths and Facts.
Myth #1: Tanning clears up skin. Although a tan may temporarily mask acne, the sun can make the skin dry and irritated, leading to more breakouts Myth #2: Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. Eating too many sugary, high-fat foods in never a good idea. NO SPECIFIC FOODS have been proven to cause acne. Myth #3: The more you wash your face, the fewer breakouts you’ll have. As a general rule: Wash your face twice a day with mild soap and water. Myth #4: Popping pimples will help them go away faster. By squeezing pimples and zits, you can actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin. Myth #5: Don’t wear makeup if you want clear skin. As long as you choose cosmetics that are noncomedogenic, ITS OK! Myth #6: If you keep getting breakouts, it helps to use more acne medication until breakouts stop. Acne medication contains drying agents like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, using too much medication may cause overydrying of the skin.

8 What the hair? DID You know????
The same type of oil that causes breakouts on your face also comes from the pores in your scalp!!! The hormonal changes that occur during puberty can cause hair to become oily. Glands are more active during puberty. The glands on the hair follicle deposit oil on each hair. This makes hair shiny but also attaches dirt to the hair. If you have oily hair it needs to be washed more frequently. Choose a shampoo to suit your hair type.

9 Smelly, Baaaaddd breathe????
Oral hygiene is important at all ages! Cavity prevention Maintains fresh breath –attractive smile – dealing with braces! A clean mouth requires daily removal of plaque and food particles When not cleanied regularly, bacteria in the mouth increase. If you have braces: be sure to clean food particles around the wires. This can cause decay!

10 HAAAALLL – Itosis BAD breath aka halitosis
Caused by bacteria that grow in your mouth The bacteria gather on small food pieces left in your mouth, esp between teeth Tips for bad breath: Brush your teeth and tongue for at least 2 minutes twice a day with fluoride Floss Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months Visit your dentist every 6 months

11 Please wash your hands!!! The single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness is to clean our hands!!!!! Hands = easiest transporters of germs and bacteria. Wash after: Using the restroom. Coughing Sneezing Handling food.

12 How to ….. Wash our hands!!! Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds! Check to see if your nails are dirty. Use something clean to dry your hands, such as paper towel or dryer. Hand sanitizers: Use when no accdess to sink Reduce bacteria counts Kills microogranisms Quick and easy In one study only 58% of female and 48% of male middle and high school students washed their hands after using the bathroom. Of these only 33% of the females and 8% of the males used soap.

13 Sweat. What’s the norm? Don’t sweat the facts:
Sweating has a super important job! It cools our bodies when we are hot. You have 2 to 4 million sweat glands all over your body Sweat glands during puberty secrete chemicals into the sweat that has a strong smelling odor. Sweat and smell are normal parts of becoming an adult! Glands are located primarily under the arms and in genital area. When stimulated they produce perspiration, and when sweat comes in contact with bacteria on skin this results is body odor. Odor is often unpleasant and increases with physical activity, stress, excitement, nervousness and warmth.

14 How do you know if you smell?
People with unpleasant body odor are unable to smell themselves. You may have an unpleasant smell if you do not shower or bathe at least once a day. If you do not change clothes and undergarments daily. Air out shoes and socks to avoid stinky feet.

15 How to we get rid of the smell?
Shower or bathe every single day!!!! Wear clean clothes, socks and underwear every single day!! If you are active and sweat a lot find clothes that help absorb sweat more effectively. Use deodorant or deodorant with antiperspirant Deodorants get rid of odor of sweats by covering it up. Antiperspirants actually stop or dry up perspiration. Nothing smells better than clean skin. Perfumes are not a good substitute for shower or wash!!!!
