Lord, to Whom Shall We Go?

John 6:66-69 66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Why did Peter make that confession? 1. He had faith in the words of Jesus. John 6:68 “thou hast the words of eternal life.” 2. He had faith in Jesus Himself. John 6:69 “We believe and we Are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” He was not going to be one of the number who ceased Following Jesus.

We need to ask ourselves this same question today: Lord, to whom shall we go?

There are many places we could turn to, indeed, many do Turn away from the only way.

To whom could we go?

To the Opinions of others 1. Many turn to whatever the majority believe. a) What have we always been taught? b) What do the latest poll indicate 2. But listen to Jesus: a) Matt. 7:13-14 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it

If you followed the majority in Noah’s day, you would Have perished in the flood. I Pet.3:20-21

What is the end of Human Wisdom? 1. Some believe that ‘human wisdom’ can lead them to Truth and life.” Educational professors Key Pschologists on talk shows! They fail: Why? Isa. 55:8-9 Matt.15:9

Some will risk their eternal salvation on what their preacher, priests or leader says! 1.They reason that these ‘men of God” could not be wrong, Or lead them astray. 2.. The destruction of those following Jim Jones. 3. Paul said 2 Cor. 11:13-15 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 4. Remember what the Galatians were told: Gal. 1:8-9 and what Jesus Said:

Matt.15:12-14 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. The Blind leading the Blind: Both fall into the ditch

Some allow their conscience to be their guide! “Let your conscience be your guide”! But our consciences can not always be reliable. a) Paul had served God with a good conscience throughout his life. Acts 23:1 b) Even when he was persecuting Christians..(Acts 26:9-11) Thus Luke wrote the following about what Paul said:

Acts 26:9-11 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

Our Conscience is like a clock, which works properly Only if set properly!

This just makes me feel good…and that is what I want to follow! 1. I just feel right ! Therefore, many go by what makes them Feel right. 2. Many people put their stock in things ‘ better felt than Told”. a) God reminds us: Prov. 14:12 ; Prov. 16:25. Jerm 10:23 b) Proverbs 28:26 “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool…” Jerm. 10:23; Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: “ KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S WORD!

None of these things should be the ultimate source to where we turn if we are looking for the words of eternal life..

What Saith the Scriptures? Mtt. 7:21-23 Col. 3:17 I John 3:4 Rom. 10:17 Matt. 19:16-22

John 6:27, 25, 40 Jesus provides ‘food’ which endures to everlasting life. John 14:6 Jesus is the only way. John 6::27 Upon Jesus alone, has God ‘set His seal’ Matt. 17:1-5

God tells us how to ‘turn to Jesus’ John 16:13 …The apostles were guided by the Holy Spirit 2 Pet 1:3 The apostles received all things pertaining to Life and godliness “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: The apostles did not shun to proclaim the whole counsel of God. Acts 20:27

We must turn to the New Testament, The word God. When we read, we may understand. Ephesians 3:3-5 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

What we are told by the apostles, are the commandments of God I Cor. 14:37 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. We must hold fast to what they taught! 2 Thess. 2:15 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle Jude 3 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers

To Whom Shall We go? Jesus.. Heb. 12:1-2

We do not find Him in the words of modern theologians and filmmakers who have sought to remake Jesus according to their own image. It is been truthfully said: But only in the Bible, the apostles who were eyewitnesses of His majesty and inspired by the Spirit to reveal all that we Need to experience life and godliness.

This Mother: Her children will rise up and call her blessed, The psalmist will rightly proclaim; Her husband delights with the thought of her presence, He smiles at the sound of her name; Beauty without, beauty within, knowledge and wisdom untold, Virtue and kindness and love all in one, Godliness flows from her soul.

Loving her children, loving her husband, This mother had so much to give; She nurtured our life as a mother…a wife, She brightened the home where she lived.. And now that she’s gone to a much better home My task is quite clearly implied, To live in a way that I’ll see her some day, God’s grace will bring me to her side. Written in honor of Pauline Fielding Lovell, November 18, 2011 by her son, Buzz Lovell
