Project Description  37,000 square foot Server Lab  Server Load: 150 Watts/SF expandable to 200 W/SF  Lab located in existing 48 year old, 48,000 SF single story building with only one exterior wall. Remaining three walls are shared walls with other buildings or below grade.  Entire building roof required replacement due to excessive leaks. Existing center high bay area in the center of the building was to remain.  Server lab was located on a 30” raised floor with under-floor cool air supply  Server racks vary in size (some new racks and some existing racks relocated from other HP sites)  A new chiller plant building, located near Building 6A, was added to serve the new lab.

Energy Efficiency Measures  EEM 1 - Hot aisle containment with Non-ducted air side economizer with barometric relief : Clear vinyl curtains were hung from the ceiling to contain the heat exiting from the server racks. Cool outside air is supplied to the lab without the use of any additional fans. By over sizing the air intakes and relief louvers we were able to introduce outside air without using supplemental fans.  EEM2 - Maximize chiller efficiency: By using chillers with variable speed drives, raising the chilled water supply temperature to 55 o F, and lowering the condenser water temperature the chiller efficiencies are as low as 0.35 kw/ton average.
