Weathering, Erosion, Deposition in TEXAS

Have you ever walked on a glacier? “Toe” of Matanuska Glacier Surface of Matanuska Glacier

Have you ever looked down at the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon?

Have you stood on the beach and watched the waves hit the shoreline?

Have you fished from along a sandbar on a river?

Weathering & Erosion  The difference between weathering and erosion.  The types of weathering and erosion.  That the natural agents of erosion and weathering are 1) streams, 2) glaciers, 3) wave action, 4) wind, and 5) mass movement. We will explore the effects of natural processes on land forms and learn:

Weathering breaking down of rocks to form smaller pieces (particles)

The forces of Weathering plants animals (including humans), abrasion by wind abrasion by water heat - cold

Mechanical Weathering A physical break down of rock Agents of Weathering: Plants Humans, Animals Wind Water Variation of heat and cold over time

Chemical weathering Chemical weathering changes the chemical composition of the rock material. Also known as decomposition or decay Appearance such as color is changed May include dissolving of rock in water. Caused by: Water

Erosion the process of carrying away smaller rock particles. Movement has to take place.

Agents of Erosion streams glaciers waves animals (including humans) Wind mass movement by gravity

Mechanical weathering by ?????

Mechanical weathering: Plants

Mechanical Weathering by ?????

Mechanical Weathering: Animals (Humans /dynamite) Construction began in 1931 and Hoover Dam was completed in 1936. Black Canyon prior to construction of Hoover Dam.

Mechanical weathering by ??????

Mechanical weathering: wind Note typical “pitted” texture.

Mechanical weathering by ???????

Mechanical weathering by water Niagara Falls

Mechanical weathering by ?????

Mechanical weathering: variation of heat and cold over time. Must have moisture to freeze and thaw in cracks that “push” pieces away This specific type is called exfoliation and is responsible for forming Enchanted Rock near Fredericksburg, TX.

Chemical weathering by ??????

Chemical weathering: water Water dissolves limestone leaving behind a cave

Erosion caused by ???????

Erosion caused by water – explain the large size rock present in stream bed?

Erosion caused by ?????????

Erosion caused by glacier carving a typical “U” shaped valley.

Erosion caused by ???????

Erosion caused by waves

Erosion caused by ?????

Erosion caused by animals (including humans). Explain how can prairie dogs cause erosion?

Erosion caused by ??????

Erosion caused by wind

Erosion caused by ?????

Erosion caused by gravity
