2 Focus on Religion Chapter 14, Section 2 Terms – Establishment Clause-forbids US Congress from passing legislation that establishing one single religion for the United States – Free Exercise Clause-US Congress cannot limit practices that deny a citizen freedom of religion (Examples: cannot force Amish schools to send students to public schools past 8 th grade, Cannot force Jehovah Witness to salute the flag in the classroom) – Parochial school-religious or church related school – Secular-pertaining to worldly and not religiously – Abridge-to shorten or limit – Precedent-a model of decision that is followed in future as base for future decisions
