Perkins 2015-16 End of Year Evaluation Rowan Cabarrus Community College

Perkins funding made a difference at our college by: Providing equipment and supplies for nursing laboratories used by A.D.N, L.P.N and C.N.A ( CCPP) students Expanding student access to advanced technology equipment in Automotive Technology, Biotechnology and Welding. Professional development opportunities for CTE faculty in engineering technologies, early childhood, radiography.

Our college’s best practice using Perkins funds is: Professional development of faculty in industry training, conferences and NAPE provide foundation for enhanced recruitment messages and retention of non-traditional students in CTE programs. Lessons learned in equity in education are translated to all areas of the college and impact the quality all students’ experience at the college.

1. We strengthened the academic, career and technical skills of our students by: Evaluation of program course offerings all CTE areas, clearly defining the sequence of courses to complete in 2 years full-time or as a part-time student. Established CTE pathways for automotive technology, welding and pre-health for secondary students to matriculate to post-secondary coursework seamlessly. CTE programs with potential matriculation to senior universities have mathematics and science course options to meet both AAS and BS criteria - Engineering, Biotechnology.

2. We linked career and technical education at the secondary level with career and technical education at the postsecondary level: Partnership with AL Brown High School to offer welding to juniors and seniors at the college campus and developed a welding laboratory on the high school campus which opened Spring 2016. Offered C.N.A. training to Cabarrus County High School students at the North Carolina Research Campus. Students will be able to continue their training at the college level on completion. Developed the CCP 9-14 Pathway for IT (CTI)

3. We provided students with strong experience in, and understanding of all aspects of an industry by: Our work based learning program is integrated in all CTE programs including Medical Office and Office Systems technology, Computer Integrated Technology, Business Technology and Biotechnology and served 84. Students in dental assisting, radiography, nursing have clinical experiences in public health care settings beyond traditional acute care settings. Engineering technology and cosmetology programs include extensive field trips to related industries in a 4 county region.

4. We developed, improved, or expanded the use of technology in career and technical education by: Purchase of Programming Logic Computers Radiography Equipment training Mannikins for Nursing and C.N.A students and SIM training for Nursing Faculty. Electric Car purchase for use in Automotive Technology on alternative energy engines.

5. We provided professional development by: All faculty are required to complete 30 hours of professional development including annual updates of distance education Blackboard training, training modules for use of academic planning. Career Counselors of the local high schools received training about the C.N.A collaborative program to effectively counsel high school students about the opportunity. Sent 2 instructors to IWITS training Providing NAPE training to CTE program chairs & faculty to develop effective recruiting, retention and completion strategies for non-traditional students.

6. We developed and implemented evaluations of our career and technical education programs by: Annual reviews and goal setting for enrollment, retention for each CTE program. Advisory committees meet 2 times per year to review each CTE program, assess technical standard and provide feedback on student preparation for industry employment. Career counselors and disability services counselors provide services on referral by faculty or by individual student request.

7. We Initiated, improved, expanded, and modernized quality career and technical education programs, including relevant technology by: Equipment purchases such as Electric Car for the Automotive Department Dental Equipment – molds and tool sets Mannikins for Nursing Mobile Networking Lab Welder with wireless capability

8. We provided services and activities that are of sufficient size, scope, and quality to be effective as evidenced by: We provide additionally the following services: Job Fairs and Activities for students and alumni – 285 students served annually, not including alumni STEM Festival for the community elementary, secondary and post-secondary groups. All activities are conducted by currently enrolled students in CTE and supported by their faculty.

9. We provided activities to prepare special populations students who are enrolled in CTE courses by: Career Counselors/Advisors collaborate with CTE programs and community partners to hold 2 job fairs (one each semester). Preparatory activities include resume workshops, dress for success workshop and vouchers for clothing, interviewing practice, and cosmetology/esthetic tips. Students served in 2015-16. Student leadership activities include clubs serving Automotive, Cosmetology, skills USA work, AHR and other academic programs. Academic and Career advisors/counselors also work with individual students on referral from faculty.

Closing Thoughts Perkins funding allows us to expand relevant technology to the classrooms and expand the professional development of the faculty to deliver high quality education Data provided in the last 2 years has helped the CTE faculty focus their work at the program level related to retention and completion. Thanks to the system office team for working to streamline our reporting online, data analysis and distribution and training for Perkins Grant coordinators at the local level.
