Overhauling our alumni council “Houston, we have a problem.” – Right council, wrong purpose Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – Albert Einstein If you always do, what you have always done, you will always get, what you have always gotten.

Three most critical factors for a successful transition Proper timing is important Mission & Vision are crucial “Buy in” is essential

Proper Timing Create a timeline for the transition – Create plenty of time to gain support – Let the council decrease in size, don’t recruit new members – Recommend a final meeting of the former council in the spring, new council starts up in the fall

Creating “Buy In” Start internally within your own office Get support from your VP and the rest of the Advancement Division – You will need their help to be successful – Might need to create other campus partnerships Make your case to the Alumni Council Leadership Get the blessing from the whole Alumni Council

Reflections on the change New recruiting and interview process was very effective Having campus leaders partner with us on managing our committees was critical to our success New council is full of energy and ideas, highly motivated
