1. Instructions For Safe Use Of Metabo Grinder

2.  Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.  Use the right tool for the job.  Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use damaged tools.  Operate tools according to the manufacturer’s instructions.  Provide and properly use the right personal protective equipment (PPE). FIVE BASIC SAFETY RULES

3. On XXXXXXXXAlliance project sites, Metabo Grinders are only used for tube cutting purposes. Any other use of these grinders requires notification of and approval from the Fluor/Luminant Alliance HSE Department. METABO GRINDERS

4. The operator bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by inappropriate use. Generally recognized accident prevention regulations and appropriate Safety Instructions must be observed at all times while using grinders. PROPER USE OF METABO GRINDERS

5. WARNING! USERS MUST READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL SAFE USE INSTRUCTIONS Failure to follow safe use instructions may result in electrical shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury to the user. GENERAL SAFETY RULES

6.  Work Areas must be kept clean and well lit at all times. Cluttered and dark work areas invite accidents/incidents to occur.  Do not operate grinders in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. (Grinders create sparks which may ignite dust or fumes.)  Keep bystanders away while operating grinders.  Distractions can cause you to lose control of the grinder you are using. WORK AREAS

7.  Grinders must be plugged into an outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances.  Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way.  Do not use any adapter plugs. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

8.  If the grinder should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low-resistance path to carry electricity away from the user.  Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). * This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

9.  Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. There is an increased risk of electrical shock if your body is grounded.  Do not expose grinders to rain or wet conditions. * Water entering a grinder will increase the risk of electrical shock.  Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tool or pull the plug from an outlet.  Keep the cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, and moving parts. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

10.  Report damaged cords immediately so they can be properly repaired. * Damaged cords increase the risk of electrical shock. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

11.  Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a grinder. Do not use a grinder while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. * A moment of inattention when operating a grinder may result in serious personal injury.  Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. * Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. PERSONAL SAFETY

12.  Avoid accidental starting. Only grinders (or other power tools) with the “dead-man” switch are permitted.  Carrying grinders with your finger on the switch or plugging in grinders that have the switch on invites accidents.  Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the grinder on. * A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the grinder may result in person injury. PERSONAL SAFETY

13.  Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the work piece to a stable platform. * Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control and personal injury.  Do not force the grinder. Use the correct grinder for the application. * The correct grinder will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed for. TOOL USE AND CARE

14.  Do not use a grinder if the switch does not turn it on or off properly. * Any grinder that can not be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be taken out of service and repaired.  Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the grinder. * Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the grinder accidentally. 15.  Store idle grinders out of reach of untrained persons. * Grinders are dangerous in hands of untrained users.  Maintain grinders with care.  Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the grinders operation. If damaged, have the grinder serviced before using. * Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. TOOL USE AND CARE

16.  Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for the model of your grinder. * Accessories that may be suitable for one grinder may become hazardous when used on another grinder. TOOL USE AND CARE

17.  Grinder service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. * Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury. SERVICE

18.  Always use the proper guard for the grinding wheel being used. * A guard protects the operator from broken wheel fragments.  Accessories must be rated for at least the speed recommended on the tools warning label. * Wheels and other accessories running over rated speeds can fly apart and cause injury. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

19.  Hold grinder by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. * Contact with a “live” wire will make exposed metal parts of the grinder “live” and will shock the operator.  Always wear eye, face, hearing, hand, arm, head, and foot protection. Use of other personal protective equipment such as respirators, blue coveralls, etc may be required depending on the task being performed. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

20.  Before using the grinder, the side handle must be installed so both hands can be used to safely control the grinder at all times while it is being used. * One hand must be kept on the handle at all times while using the grinder.  Dust generated during operation of the grinder is often hazardous to health therefore the use of a suitable respirator is recommended to be worn while using the grinder. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

21.  Dust can be explosive therefore it is important to take the time to remove any accumulations when using the grinder.  Ensure that sparks produced during work do not constitute a risk to the user or other personnel and are not able to ignite flammable substances.  Endangered areas must be protected with flame-resistant covers. Make sure that fire risk areas are always provided with suitable fire extinguishers. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

22.  Respect the maximum grinding disc diameter. The diameter of the central hole in the grinding disc must fit the inner flange with play. Do not use any adapters or reducers.  The permitted speed for discs must correspond at least to the no-load speed for the grinder.  Carry out a test run after every tool change, ensuring that you are holding the grinder firmly with both hands. * Hold the grinder away from your body. Ensure that there is no one present in the area at risk. Run the grinder for approximately 30 seconds. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

23.  Observe the information and instructions provided by the grinder or accessory manufacturer.  Do not contaminate discs with grease or subject them to impact.  Damaged or vibrating grinders should not be used.  Never use cutting discs for grinding purposes. * Cutting discs must not be subjected to any lateral pressure. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

24.  Use grinders in dry operating conditions only.  Do not attempt to touch the moving discs – risk of injury.  To avoid the possibility of unintentional start-up, always turn off the switch when the plug is removed from the socket or if an interruption to the power supply has occurred.  If using threaded hole discs, ensure that the thread in the disc is long enough for the spindle. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

25.  Ensure that the work piece is held firmly in place.  Ensure that ventilation openings are kept clear when working in dusty conditions. If it should become necessary to clear dust, first disconnect the grinder from the main power supply and avoid damaging internal parts.  Abrasive wheels must be handled and stored in accordance with manufacturers instructions. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

26.  Always use auxiliary handle for maximum control over torque reactions or kick-back. * Operation of the grinder without the side handle could cause loss of control of the grinder resulting in possible serious personal injury.  Before using a grinder or installing a new wheel, inspect the grinding wheel for chips and cracks. * Remove back wheels immediately. Run the tool at no load for one minute, holding the tool in the direction away from employees. Wheels with flaws will normally break apart during this time. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

27.  Carefully handle both the grinder and individual grinding wheels to avoid chipping or cracking. Install a new wheel if the grinder is dropped. Do not use a wheel that may be damaged. * Fragments from a wheel that bursts during operation will fly away at great velocity possibly striking you or bystanders.  If the safety clutch is tripped, switch the grinder off immediately and remedy the fault. 28.  A damaged or cracked handle must be replaced. Never operate a grinder with a defective handle.  Always wear proper PPE when operating grinders or other power tools.  Always read the manufacturer’s operating instructions prior to using tools that you have never used before.
